Is there a safe powerful cleaner to
clean grime off shower walls other than
the grocery or department store
products?

CLR or its generic equivalent.. Also, Home Depot carries a cleaner in a pink can. Can't remember the name but ask someone in plumbing.

We use the foaming bubble type, spray it and leave it 10 minutes. Then we take a magic eraser pad, keeping it wet with straight water. Works good!

"The hard water we have laughs at CLR, limeaway or vinegar."

I have that problem too. I have found something that cleans it
though. "The Works" toilet bowl cleaner. No scrubbing.
(not The Works shower cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner)
Squirt it on, let it run down. If it doesn't cover, rub it around.
Let it set just a few minutes and rinse it out. Done.

BIG caveat, be prepared to leave the room/house for a while.
It stinks to high heaven! Like trying to breathe acid fumes.

If you have super-hard water, look for Nyco Cling-On phosphoric acid bathroom cleaner. It's like nicer-smelling, cheaper Naval Jelly (around $6/quart in bulk) and is really for toilets but will remove mineral deposits from sinks and tile and glass like nothing else. You will likely find it at a janitorial supply place. Rubber gloves, goggles, and an open window are all good ideas if you're slathering this stuff all around (I don't know if this meets your definition of "safe"...)

I like Watkin's products... tub & tile cleaner. It's amazing stuff and removes rust too (even with a softener, we still have iron and lime in our water).

If you have hard water like I do try some ice machine cleaner.the stuff works great on lime and is food grade and plastic safe.I have even flushed my parents hot water heater with it.

For years I did as Royce has done. the works toilet bowl cleaner. Keep in mind it was made for toilets and extensive use will do some damage to a fiberglass shower kit. Once you get a good clean I recommend GOOF OFF rust stain remover. Squirts on effected area let sit 5 to 10 minutes, then a light scrubbing with a greeny then rinse. Reapply if needed. But it does good work.

The best cleaner is preventative action. Get a small squeegee, one made for shower. Squeegee the doors and walls down before you step out. I do it religiously and my 15 year old shower looks like new on hard water well. Guests always ask me how do you do that.
Side note. A bozo guest one time did not squeegee as requested. That night the shower looked like WWii. It took him an hour to clean it right rather than two minutes with the squeegee.

I've use Bar Keepers Friend with good luck to take off rust and mineral stains that nothing else would touch. Takes a bit of scrubbing but is should help you.

(quoted from post at 15:19:58 01/03/16) Mix half Blue Dawn And half cleaning vinegar (6%). Put in spray bottle. Spray it on let it set for 30 minutes or so and rinse it off. If you can't find 6% vinegar use regular old 5%

NEVER mix cleaning chemicals unless you are a chemist . Nyco products is out of Chicago, their products are probably found only within 250 miles of there. Phosphoric acid is what is used commercially. You can get it at a dairy supply as milk stone remover or at restaurant supply as delimer.

Had a college roommate mix bleach and toilet bowl cleaner to clean the shower one time. That makes chlorine gas- the fan was one of those recycle types, not a true vent. I was literally coughing up blood (heavy smoker at the time, didn't help). As many other times, different circumstances, lucky to survive.

Depending on the surface material, Vani-Sol High Acid Bowl Cleanse, 23% hydrochloric acid. Have the vent fan running first and be ready to leave the room. I tried this stuff once on my fiberglass 30" shower (have very hard water) and it cleaned all the stains nicely, doesn't seem to have hurt the stall's finish. Don't think I'll try it too often though.

What is your tub and shower surround made of?
I have a couple of rentals. Both have upgraded bathrooms - tile shower walls, tile
floor, enameled steel tubs.
I've mostly had good tenants but you still have to some cleaning when they leave.
I buy a couple gallons of muriatic acid and a long handled scrub brush and go after all the tile, grout, toilet, floor and tub with it.
What that will clean is not only marvelous but amazing. I use it full strength out of a pail. Use a garden sprayer and full strength acid to get in hard to reach areas.
Also use the sprayer to rinse those areas afterwards. I really flood everything with clean water afterwards. It will cut away calcium effortlessly but doesn't work on rust stains so well.
I am no safety nut generally but for that job I do wear a good respirator, goggles, rubber gloves and old clothes.
