Can I Disassemble 2 cylinder JD PTO from inside?

This may sound weird, but I'll try to explain.

My 1956 80 has a bad seal on the internal side of the PTO shaft. I have the tractor split to fix some differential problems, and I have access to the rear of the PTO at the same time, including the PTO oil pump, so I was going to replace the seal. After taking the pump off, I can feel play in the shaft itself, meaning a worn bearing.

Does anyone know, or have tried to take the back of the PTO assembly off, and get the clutch drum off along with the clutch drum quill, so I can replace that bearing?

My best guess is that I can just pull it right out!

I can't say one way or another as I've never worked on one of them myself. It might help you thought to take a look at a parts manual, if you don't have a service manual. I know seeing the parts break down on something usually helps me almost as much, and sometimes more, than a service manual will.

Thanks Wayne, I do have the parts and service manuals. The service only mentions removal with the whole PTO assembly removed, the parts manual is encouraging, but I wanted to ask because I've been burned before!

I found the answer to my question. NO! haha

The clutch drum housing will not come out, it did move and attempt to come out, but it hit the rear axle nuts (duh!).

The clutch drum itself, while moving, would only slide backwards so far. I suspect it has to go forward to come out.

Thanks!
