Help, JD 4010 stuck in gear!

Good morning, please excuse since I am new to this forum, But last night I was using my 4010 to move some snow, and when I shifted to reverse, I let out the clutch and it acted like it was stuck between gears. I tried to move the shift lever and it is stuck where it is. I slowly let off the clutch and it killed the motor. Now it wont start since I cant get the shift lever to move to a quaudrant that will let it start. This is a syncro shift gas 4010 and I can get the lever to move on the left side from one space to the other (quaudrant range), but not on the right side. This thing is sitting in the middle of my driveway and I cant get it to where I can start it or move it. I need help of any kind. Thanks.

There's a latch in the quadrant under the dash. Sounds like maybe there's some slop in it and it dropped in to two slots at once. That's the first place I'd check. Take the cowl cover off and see what you can see down in there. I might be all wet with that answer, but I had a 3010 that gave me shifting fits until I swapped out that whole casting that holds that quadrant with one from the boneyard.

Take the cover off of the top of the control pedestal, and then disconnect the two shift rods from the shift lever mechanism.

Then, you should be able to maneuver the shift levers back to "park" (or maybe just below park), pull the two linkages into position ans reconnect them.

Just be SURE the tractor is on level ground and chock the wheels so it doesn't run over you when the tranny unlocks.

The shift lever mechanism likely needs to be rebuilt and snugged up.

WORST case scenario could be that worn synchronizers have dropped out of place on the tranny's top shaft.

To move it you can remove the cowl and remove a shifter pin, the inside one would be the one,, it sounds like the quadrant latch lever is broken, this latch holds one quadrant drum while the other one shifts,, I will try to get a picture posted..It's #5 in the picture.

I disconnected the shifting rod from the shift lever last night, and tried to move the top lever on the side of the tractor and couldnt get it to budge. but I'm new to this thing and have no clue. it has been running fine till this. We tried to pull it with a truck since it's in the middle of the drive way and sitting on a slight incline, but it wouldn't move forward or backwards.

I should clearify, the lever I tried to move manually was the top lever on the side of the transmission.

Had a 5020 that done same thing stuck in forward gear. What caused it was dirt had built up under the shifter rod clevis and arm on top of the trans housing and wouldn't let the arm go
back down to get into neutral. I had to dig the dirt out from the right side cowling bottom where it meets the trans housing. Little at a time out of a small hole, no other good way, dirt gets
trapped in their.

Thanks, but this 4010 has the levers right on the side of the transmission out in the open, I can maually move the bottom lever, but cant move the top lever.

That thought came to mind late in the night, If I jack it up and try to rock one of the rears, it may free it up so I can get it out of the driveway. I am guessing though that the wheel will spin freely since there is no differential lock, but I really dont know for sure.

Thanks for all the input guys, you have given me several ideas to try this evening after work. Again, Thanks for all your help!

Hi
If you find its not the quadrant lock like others said it could be worn selectors, or syncro's like others said. Had a guy go from a gear into
top with one the syncro discs dropped in on that and jammed it between gears in the field. It stopped so fast it put the steering wheel in to his
chest!. If you are on a bit of a hill, you could try inching the tractor back or forward depending on which way it's facing with a truck or another
tractor.
I had a customer with a big loaded tandem grain truck get between 2 gears on a hill in his field, it stalled it dead like your issue and he
couldn't get it free. it was pointing cab down, so what we did was put his big 4wd tractor on the back, got the truck brakes off with the clutch
pushed in as we had to run the motor for air brakes. you might have fun there as without it running you got no brakes on that tractor if my memory's
correct on towing a 4010 once. then I told him to try move the shifter lever as soon as he felt the truck start to move when i pulled gently. In
less than 2" it popped out of the stuck ranges when the pressure came off the gears. He then drove the truck to a dealers for trans work as he had
been having issues finding neutral for a while.!. He figured I was stupid with my idea but it worked and saved him a lot of money on a tow truck
L.O.L. If you try this you got to figure out according to which way it's pointing how you got to pull it to try get that pressure off. so if its
front down it should pull from the back up. if it's front up it should pull from the front up hill. Hopefully if you don't find the other problem that will work for you. If not then it might be bad news. I kinda hope you aren't new to this tractor . If so you might be finding out why the last guy sold it.
Regards Robert
