,,maybe someone can find the link and post this from a Louisville news station? /. The nice town of Paoli Ind, lost a landmark on Christmas day ,,. the steel truss brace bridge was built in 1880 and maintained all those years is in ruins ,, thanx to the stupidity and collective intelligence of 2 gals driving a semi with 35 ton of bottled water aboard,. and at noon in broad daylite this happened! , why in the world they turnd off 37 as they did and came the old avenue , and disregarded all the signs,,. I guess they did not like or know how to back that rig up and turn it around ? and was thinking if santa claus could make himself small enuf to get down the chimneys everywhere ,, than it sure is worth a try! ,, to not even judge the height of the trailer as opposed to the bridge defies all logic,. loox like they were going 30 mph plus , rekon they thought they could sqeeze thru if they got up enuf speed , peeled the trailer roof off til the deck collapsed ,//. kinda reminds me of the middle eastern driver on Alaska trukers that thought his dash was on fire and baled out of a perfectly good truck with a burst heater hose ,. didn't set the brakes , just let the truk roll bak over the hill down the curve and wipe out everyone ,, the wreker man told him .. YOU ARE NEVER DRIVING AGAIN IN THIS COUNTRY ,YOU ARE A MENACE TO ANYONE ON THE ROAD and the vehicles you are in too ,,.

True they may get a ticket for $135, but I want to see the tow bill, environmental cleanup ( since I'm sure they put at least a drop of oil in the river) and bridge salvage cost. Would be great if they stuck the replacement cost to them.

Betting they'll be out of a job and wondering how much the trucking companies insurance will be covering.

People don't pay any attention to weight limit signs or speed limit signs.

There is a 3 ton bridge just south of my house speed limit is posted 25 MPH. The county commissioner and his brother drive there semi over it loaded with corn every fall doing at least 50mph. They almost ran over me while I was trying to get a package out of my mail box.

When I haul chloride in the summer, there are many roads I have to back down 1/2 or 3/4 of a mile 3 times, so I can get 3 passes on that chunk..DUE TO BRIDGES THAT WON'T HOLD MY WEIGHT!! Stupid people that don't read signs. And I have to do that on each side of the bridge on gravel roads and all dead ends.

When I read that there was a woman driving the truck, I wondered if it might have been my son's wife. She is smarter than any road sign, (know what I mean?) But the truck didn't belong to the company she drives for.

(quoted from post at 22:53:30 12/26/15) Kind of reminds me of a different gal that's running for political office who also believes the rules don't apply to her.

Who'd that? Palin? Opps nnalert! Rules don't apply to either.

Whether male or female, there is no excuse for what this idiot driver did.

That said, there are far to many bridges in this Country that are in extremely bad shape. This happens more due to governmental waste than anything. Between Governmental waste, and just plain poor planning when building new infrastructure, or failing to maintain the old infrastructure, it's surprising more things like this don't happen.

We had a local bridge rebuilt years ago using Federal funds. They filled a bottom to build about 150 yards of road bed, straightening out a bad curve that the old bridge was part of. They built nice, concrete abutments on each side, and then a really nice, new bridge. They tore the old one down......and then rebuilt a glorified version of it right back in the same spot. Once the second new bridge was in, they tore the first one down, even though it was built just as well, and actually straightened out a dangerous curve. All of the gravel fill was given away to anyone with a way to load it and haul it off. Neighbor in the know said they had to rebuild the first one, in the same spot, because using federal funds meant they couldn't make more than a 10% change in what was originally there. SO, to save money by prohibiting a 10% change, they spent at least 200% more than needed to complete the project within those guidelines.

As far as weight limits, when there are businesses built at the end of roads where heavy equipment is routinely needed, and there is a low limit bridge in the way......or rather one that the state allows to deteriorate until it becomes a low limit bridge, what are the businesses to do? In the words of one mobile crane operator we worked with years ago when asked that question, his response was "What low limit bridge". They can't force the state to repair the bridge, they can't move the business, and they can't do without the equipment to keep operating....All they can do is take the chance and hope things work out......

That's about 10 miles from my house. The funny thing is right behind the truck is a big construction lot he could have easily turned around in I've been across that bridge several time and to tell you the truth I'm not ever very crazy about crossing it in a pickup or car and there is a state highway one block west of the bridge. I guess the optimistic thing is tho this is the first time paoli has been in the news this very and it hasn't been someone killing someone. They had two shootings this year. One was coworkers at a hole in the wall auto shop the other was a dad killed his wife and two kids. If I remember right one child got away. They were all very young children. I'd much rather see them on the news for some idiot trying to cross a bridge than another shooting

looking at the picture the rear tandems are not on the bridge---i don't think it was a case of overweight but do to over height and the top chord trusses got bent and knocked out causing the bridge to collapse

so true ,,. the bridge probably woulda carried the load , had it been not as tall , BUT , the superstructure and the trailer roof pulling the trusses out of place compromised the truss strength ,, therefore there was no support at that point to barely support the deck without ANY LOAD ,, let alone a 35 ton loaded semi truck ,, just saw a fac book post the driver was 23 had her 17 yr old cousin along ,, and lived in the next county and was very familiar with the town ,,. she told police she did not know what 6 ton limit meant ,, she was licensed to drive in may of 2015,,. took her cousin for a ride in the semi truck to the paoli Walmart, was unable to serpentine thru some city work , and detoured ,finding a large lot being used for parking heavy equipment ,, AND NOT COMFORTABLE WITH TURNING AROUND ON NARROW STREETS AND SUPER SOAKED SHOULDERS, AND UNABLE TO BACK LONG DISTANCES SAFELY ON A 2 LANE HIWAY ,she chose the detour that lead to the old bridges demise ,,. so there you have a perfect storm of events of a immature , improperly educated adult woman with no ability to comprehend the laws of physics and complete lack of common sense ,, and the collective intelligence in the poor truck was that of a 3rd grader ,,. now for the abundant understanding from Washington dc,.. the truck is at fault it is bad, not the driver that pulled the trigger , it caused the accident ,,. we need to understand and encourage thepoor girl ,, she could become president some day if the media will only glorify her instead of crucify her,.

aoli Walmart ,

Tragic loss through stupidity. News story says steel bridge. At 1880, there may be some or a lot of wrought iron in that bridge. Truss bridges in Oklahoma in the 1920's have wrought iron for stay rods, they all have forge welded eyes on the ends. I hope a local blacksmith can check it out and salvage wrought iron for future use. It's easy to check, hit it with a grinder and red sparks with no secondary explosions, like cast iron, and it is wrought iron. Wrought iron is not be made anymore because of the health hazards puddling it in the furnace with a wooden paddle. With the value of scrap iron these days it would be a real shame to have wrought iron sold as scrap.

Maybe they are related to the jug head that took a ready mix truck through a covered bridge here a couple of years ago. They have no business driving a truck of any kind.

Or that guy driving that insulation truck that didn't make it under the railroad trestle on Backus road just south of Ben Walkington's several years ago. I used to have to go all the way around through Greenville to get to Ben's with the milk truck.

What's the difference between historic and substandard? Don't get me wrong I like some of the older things you find in small communities but semi trucks are a fact of life and are needed to support business and life across the country. I don't drive a truck but it's pretty clear to me that the truck shouldn't be going across a bridge like that. I know many communities have posted truck routes so things like this don't occur and I have to say if the city doesn't plan and post truck routes they have some responsibility in this one. It's not that I'm ignorant of trucking, my Dad was a trucker for almost 50 years. I remember him talking about delivering cars in Chicago, there was only a few ways in and out of various parts of the city because of viaducts, elevated trains and other low bridges. My mother drove school bus for years, her route was the only one that could only be ran in one direction as there was a "historic" bridge and she wasn't allowed to cross with any students on board, eventually someone from the county road department got to thinking and she wasn't allowed to take her bus across the bridge period. Then one New Year's Day a drunk in a Dodge pick up arranged for us to get a new bridge, wasn't that nice of him?

I watch our crumbling infrastructure, I hear if issues with roads that continually are under repair and for some reason can't be fixed right. My daughter lives in Kalamazoo Michigan and hear of the millions and billions of dollars Michigan wants to spend re doing I-94 where a lot of the accidents they have could simply be prevented with a more aggressive snow and ice control program. They want to build more capacity in the road but might it be a better idea to improve or build new roads that would help alleviate the congestion on I-94 and also save us the misery induced by the 5 year construction program it will take to improve the road. Where else but government could/would a manager think "gee this road is used above it's capacity 5 days a week so let's shu it down for 5 years to make it bigger" I wonder if it's graft (legal or otherwise) or incompetence. The government seems willing to stick it's nose into everything but doesn't seem to be able to handle basic things like passable roads. Why do we let them get away with it? Current DOT practices seem to indicate they're more worried about a driver using a CPAP machine than if they have the basic intelligence to under sand what "6 Ton Limit" means or the basic common sense not to get yourself and your truck someplace where 6 ton bridges and low overpasses abound.

I'm pleased that the trucking company embraces diversity. Sometimes lesser qualified people just have to be given a chance in order to promote diversity.
