the chain is for a snowmobile I need to shorten it,is there a special link or is it just the pin you put in? thanks for any help

No idea on your link, but if it's just stretched and now no room for adjustment, it's time to replace the chain. If you don't, you'll be replacing the sprockets soon.

If it's something from one application being put to use in a different application, disregard.

Silent chain is usually not shortened if on an original application. They have either a tensioner on the slack side, or nothing. by design they run farther out on the sprockets as they wear, but at the point of excess looseness, or jumping teeth, they are replaced. Stretched chain has the wrong pitch to run on sprockets, and will self destruct rapidly. Jim

There are master links and half links available for pretty much all chain. The site that you ordered it from should have both.

I put a link in mine years ago when I changed the gearing, a few weeks later I had to walk home, link broke (ever try walking 2 miles in 12" of snow?) I bought a new chain the correct length, just saying, Chuck

It depends on the style chain you have. Check the manufacturer's web site to see what they say about master links. Lots of silent chain have cotter key retained master pins but you may need to remove the end cap cover.

Yes I live Near Newton, NJ. Rode a lot of miles in Quebec too, and I've ridden in NH, VT and Me. over the years and have done a lot of tractor pulling. Where were you when your stuff was stolen? A few years ago there was a truck and snowmobiles stolen where we were staying, can't remember the name. Chuck

We were in St. Michelle des Saintes. It is two hours North NE of Montreal, and one hour south of an Indian reservation. The Indians are exempt from registrations. I had gassed up in that same town once, but I have ridden more over to the Northwest of Montreal. Let me know when you are planning to come up to NH and we can get together. Or maybe you would want to join one of our "ordeal" rides in ME. On our last ride, one guy was on a rental that broke down after 70 miles, after already loosing his first sled and a back-up. We left that place after they brought a replacement, at 7:20 with 200 miles to go to where we were staying that night.
