Home made Christmas gifts

Spent a little time today making some lumber and hay for my Grandson. I sawed these out of a piece of sassafras firewood on my table saw. He is 4 years old and I thought this might help him learn his numbers.

What have you guys made for your kids or grand children for this Christmas?

Looks great and a good idea! At that age he'll have fun with that.

I made a barn, machinery dealer and a grain elevator years ago when the 1/64 stuff came out and my 2 oldest boy were little out of balsa wood. Haven't made anything like that in years though. The oldest boy is almost 42 now.

My wife owned a print shop at one time. I made up alphabet charts in printed and cursive, both Caps and lower case for my grandkids when they were first learning the alphabet. Did the same for learning numbers. Made bird houses, squirrel houses, and wood duck houses for a couple of years until demand from the grandkids was satisfied.

My grandson came up with his dad and we sawed up some logs he had to make electric guitar bodies and necks. He liked helping run a sawmill.

I make brooms and knit socks most every year but that is for adults, not kids.

The numbered hay is a great idea.

In 1979 things were very tight. The GM where I worked was all over Jimmy Carter's Whip Inflation Now! and gave no raises. I had just built an addition to our house, and one thing that I had was lots of scrap wood. I cut many pieces into various sizes so that there were many of each size. I then painted them, so that each block had different colors. All it cost me was for a couple more half pints of paint and some time. My daughter was very happy with them and she and her younger brother played with them for years after. They were the same type of thing that my brothers and sister and I happened to get when I was little.

3.5 year-old grandson is doing good on alphabet and numbers, except for some reason he always skips over 15. Something like that would be useful to him.

When I was young we had a laundry basket
full of 2x6 pieces I think left over from
building the house. Believe it or not,
after 3 kids, those blocks were about wore
out.

I made my oldest daughter akitchen table out of maple for her apartment. I also made a set of corn hole boards for a friend to go along with his love of Farmall tractors.

Plenty of homemade gifts through the years. One year I made a set of blocks with roof planks and all the
stuff to make houses. When the kids got older SWMBO decided we didn't need them anymore and used them
for kindling wood (I didn't know at the time). She never thought about grandkids and is sorry she didn't
keep them.

I finished this display case at 10:30 last night. Cat is optional. It is for my GF's daughter.
