tractor registration

In the post about the guy from Belgium needing some infor mation to register his tractor.
What state requires tractors to be registered. I have never heard of that needing being done with the hauling of tractors to about all the states in the 48.
I'm in MI and none needed here.

I agree - this is something that those of us on the left side of the Atlantic never even think about. Certainly not here in Kansas. But, if you watch YouTube videos of European farming operations (or visit there, for that matter) you'll notice that many of the tractors have license plates. European farmers use their tractors for more on-road operations than we typically do in North America; we use trucks where it is more common there for a farmer to haul grain and other goods with his tractor and a wagon/trailer. This is also why a lot of larger European tractors are equipped with an air brake system and, in many countries there, very rarely with duals due to the width restrictions.

When I sold tractors on bid deals to municipalities we had to provide certificates of origin and titles to all the tractors so they could put a comercial liscence plate on them.

I'm pretty sure New Hampshire requires registration for all tractors. Maine requires it if being used commercially, ie custom work. Enforcement usually depends on the mood of the local gestapo.

I knew that most tractors in Europe and other countries outside the US did licensing. Didn't know about here in the US. As for the commercial thing. In my county in MI there is no licensing required for commercial use that I know of. The tractors the county uses, or contracts with to mow the roadside and such, do not have any sort of licensing that is visible.

Come to think of it I remember little half sized license plates on farm wagons here I Iowa when I was a kid. Do any of you other older Iowans remember them?

The last I knew, NY does require that all off road vehicles, backhoes, pay loaders, well drillers, etc to be registered if they are driven on the highway. You also need insurance on those vehicles. I am surprised that they have not tried to get farmers to license their farm tractors as they tax just about everything in this state.

None required here in IL. Please do not inform our government about this overlooked source of revenue and lack of taxing authority.

Frankly, I'm amazed tractors are not licensed. My tractors seldom are on the road because I farm one farm. All my trailers and vehicles are properly licensed and insured.

These BTOs run larger and larger and heavier tractors and combines for many miles on the road to get to their dozens of farms all across the county. Those manure trucks that are ALWAYS overloaded and spend 75% of their time on the roads don't even put taxed diesel in the trucks! Why aren't they paying fuel tax and registration? These fees pay to fix the roads they damage. If they're not paying for something they're using, aren't they as bad as a welfare case in the city?

I'd be fine with requiring a license plate and insurance on everything on the road - farm vehicles, amish buggies, and bicycles. I'd also be fine with getting rid of off-road tax exempt diesel and instead being able to get the road tax back on 95% of the fuel bought on your taxes. What's another option for funding roads? If you don't want to pay for roads, don't drive on them...

when I was in Europe in the 1970's all tractors and farm wagons had plates on them I do remember older wagons having plates on them in the early 1950's (Iowa)
