W6 with new winter coat

Finished painting neighbor's tractor. 1947 McCormick Deering W6 with add on power steering and live hydraulics. Took 6 months of weekends to finish. I have learned how to cut and buff orange peel (lots of practice) and also learned I could never make a living at this. I sure enjoyed neighbor's smile and watching him take it around the block. All the buffing was worth listening to his stories of farming with horses and how pleased he was when his father purchased the families first tractor many years ago. I cannot explain the excitement red tractors instill in me. I read this forum everyday and appreciate the wisdom and knowledge that is shared. Thank You

Great job! I wish I had some of your restoration skills. When I first bought my farm they left me an IH 350 tractor that needed some wok. My sons and I rebuilt the engine the first winter that we lived here and that od 350 was our farm tractor for several years. We lost that tractor when our barn burned but this summer I bought one that looks about the same with the same features. Now I will try to restore it but I doubt it will be quality work like the one on the old W6.

Hey Davin, would love to have more pics of the p.steering setup as a fella wants me to install p.s.on his Super MTA.

Thanks

Looks good. It's obvious you are a perfectionist if you took that much time to correct insignificant flaws. Also, when you mentioned him talking about working with horses and getting the first tractor I thought about the greatest generation and how we are losing them fast. Along with losing the greatest generation we are losing the first hand stories about transitioning from horses to tractors, something the next generation won't have the opportunity to experience.

The power steering on the W6 is driven by a small hydraulic pump on the front of the tractor where you would hand crank the engine. Neighbor told me the unit on the steering wheel with 4 hydraulic hoses is a Charlynn power steering unit. The steering wheel shaft fits inside the unit that is powered by the front hydraulic pump. The hoses off the steering wheel go to a short two way cylinder under the tractor that ties in with the front steering linkage.
The pile behind the W6 is back half of old M I broke completely in 1/2 with john deer 45 loader.
