Shortest day of the year

Our winter solstice will be Dec 21 10:49 PM CST
Sunrise at 6:52 and sunset at 5:05 for a total day length of 10:13:07
The 22nd will be a repeat of the 21st then the days will start getting longer.

I know you guys up north have much shorter days this time of the year.
So how many hours of daylight will you have on the 21st?

Just put your city in the search in the link and it will give you all the info.
Sunrise, sunset and daylength

I've been getting later sunsets since Dec. 13 (southern Minnesota). I don't care about sunrise time; it's the afternoon light that I look forward to.

Same deal in central MO. Shortest day is tomorrow but Tuesday is the same length except sunrise and sunset are a minute later each. 9 hours 28 minutes.

Rochester NY: 8:59 of daylight on the solstice. However with the usual December cloud cover it seems like only about 7 hours...

Technically December 21st is 24hrs long just like any other day.
Sunrise 7:58AM and sunset 4:50PM. That would be 8hrs and 52 minutes of sunlight according to environment Canada.
The wizz bang web site claims 8hr 55 minutes Dec 21st. 15hrs 27 minutes on summer solace.

Here it is 9 hours 25 minutes and 29 seconds. Tomorrow is 3 seconds shorter. They seem longer then normal since it is warm for this time of year.

Sun up at 7:21 sets at 4:24, just over 9 hours, here, I'm near Albany NY, 25 miles North West of it. By the way it's also a dump like NYC, lol

Well, we won't get any sun, as they have no info on my near town. Actually no info on anything near me at all. They have 15 cities in Minnesota, most clustered around the Twin Cities. Not the biggest cities, and not scattered across the state.

OtherWise, a pretty neat site, if you happen to live where they pick cities to show.

We have had very little sun at all the past month, warmer than normal, but all rain and fog and grey sky's. Miserable.

That's a great site!

8 hours 12 minutes here in Nanaimo/Ladysmith BC on Vancouver island.

Its not so bad if its clear, but when its socked in and raining it seems to just be dim all day.

Dad an I always like the second week of January, you can tell the days are getting longer and it feels a bit better...not like we get much snow or even cold weather here on the coast, just damp.

here shortest day 9 hours 8 minutes
earliest sunset 4:35 from 12/9/15 to 12/13/15 latest sunrise 7:33 am from 12/29/15 to 12/2/16

This is what I remember from a astronomy course I took, copied from earth/sky website
http://earthsky.org/earth/winter-solstice-and-late-sunrise

In short, the earliest sunset/winter solstice/latest sunrise and earliest sunrise/summer solstice/latest sunset phenomena are due to the fact that true solar days are longer than 24 hours long for several weeks before and after the solstices. At and around the solstices, the Earth must rotate farther on its axis for the sun to return to its daily noontime position, primarily because the sun is appreciably north or south of the Earth?s equator.

However, perihelion accentuates the effect around the December solstice, giving a day length of 24 hours 30 seconds. And aphelion lessens the effect around the June solstice, giving a day length of 24 hours 13 seconds.

about the same as Jay - I'm in Mass. 7:10 - 4:15 about 9 hours.

I know it could be worse further north, but 9 hours is bad enough that I hate it. The first and last hours aren't all that useful, so it's really only about 7 hours of good light - of course, I guess that depends on the elevation around you.

I never really thought about that before - mid-country-flat-landers probably have a different view of sunrise-sunset times.

Technically that's being too technical, everyone knows what he means  . Here in NAR we have 9 hours and 44 minutes of daylight today. I used to hate the short days but as I get older I only have about 9 hours and 44 minutes of energy so it's perfect.

8 hours and 49 minutes here in northern NY state near the border with Canada. We have short daylight days in the winter and long ones in the summer.

9:03.45, that is a short day.
My Grandmother used to say on New Years Day..."The days get longer, and the cold gets stronger."

Well our town is so small it doesn't come up when I put the city & territory in search. Faro Yukon Territory Canada. So I went to a larger city close by. I'm showing sunrise 11:10 & sunset 3:20 That is 4 hours & 10 min but this time of year we NEVER have sun. The sun is actually below the horizon. We just have daylight as if the sun were out but behind a cloud as it just reflects off of the clouds in the atmosphere & gives us a little daylight. We are north of the 62 parallel. Gerald

John, I've always wondered why, when we receive more sunlight starting on Dec 21, the temp does not increase comparatively?

Great site! thanks much. This is one way to set up a sun dial. In my front yard I have the mail box with a pointed top of the post. I marked summer, winter, and also spring/fall shadows. Here is a strange thing. Fall and spring DO not cast the same shadow. The slight side ways tilt of the earth throws the shadow off about 1/2 inch on a 4 foot tall post. Really neat stuff. If you have a clear horizon it is fun it see how far summer then winter sun rise or set are along that horizon. Now one that will really boggle you is the Moon. With the moons tilted orbit even in NJ you can have a full moon straight overhead in the winter. Watch for the Christmas full moon this year! It is supposed to get to 70* this Friday!

It does. It took Oct. Nov and Dec to get from 60,s down to 30,s. Three months. It will take Jan , Feb and March (which means first of April) to get back from 30 to 60,s. I think what you are really wondering is how then can it get down to 20 below in Jan or Feb like it did here in MI last winter , if the sun is up longer and getting higher? My answer, Jetstream. How does it get from that 22 below in Feb back to 60,s only 2 mos later in April? There is a "lag period" around Jan when Polar air outpowers the southern heat and doesn't care where the sun is . E/W jetstream decides which one wins out and when and for how long.

It's called insolation. Earth gets cold and it takes quite a while to warm it. First day of winter is Dec 21 or 22. Lowest Min and Max temp is Jan 21 or so in s.w.PA. So January 21 is about the middle of winter. That's why farmers say you need half your feed left around 1st of Feb.
