OT:Car goes by with strobe light at night?

At least 3 times now in the late 5 months or so, a small car has gone down our road late at night with a yellow flashing strobe going. In the summer I passed it off as our county mosquito control. The next time was during a terrible windstorm and I thought maybe it was something to do with the power company. Sat night about 12:30 am it goes by again kinda slow and I'm almost sure its the same car. Since I work nights I usually stay up late on the weekends so I was up. What the heck is it? This is in rural mid-Michigan. Is it tinfoil hat time?

Around here, every contractor's pickup truck seems to need the flashing yellow lights on the cab on at all times, even while driving down the road with no construction of any kind in sight. Some farmers' and machinery dealership vehicles do the same thing.

Dunno what the rules are, but the cops ignore them, so it must be OK?

The meter readers here work by driving by slowly. Their computer grabs the data off your meter as they go. Always have an orange flashing light.

I don't know if they still do or not,but Montcalm County Road Commission used to have somebody who did nothing but drive all the roads in the county on a regular basis looking for bad spots that needed attention. Maybe it's somebody like that.

Yes Randy, Montcalm County does still do the night road patrol in the winter. Gratiot and Clinton do it as well, they actually are paid by MDOT to check the state highway trunklines, but when that is done, they go look over other roads. They usually have 1 ton or larger pickups. Here in Gratiot we use a 550 Ford with a salt box on it. The trucks are required by the state to carry a ton of salt for spots that need IMMEDIATE attention, bridge decks, curves ramps etc.

If you live on the southern end of Gratiot, and it is a white Dodge pick up, that would be my neighbor, a local busy body, scammer, wanna be contractor.

Around here (western NY) the paper/pennysaver delivery and meter reader's cars operate with yellow strobes - often late at night. Also occasionally US Postal Service "special delivery" vehicles, gas and water company trouble shooters' cars, etc.

Bob,
The guy that used to deliver the Oneonta Star delivered in the wee hrs. of the morning. He drove an old beater and was payed to deliver on several different routes. The Star hardly exists today and they mail it if anyone wants it.
The pennysaver is still delivered by an independant with flashing yellow light, but about 10:00 Thursday mornings here.

Probably "Buyers Guide" or other such delivery. Usually they pay next to nothing so get a lot of older retired people doing it and they hate traffic and usually like to do both sides of the road "illegal", at same time for expediency so it behoves them do do the late night thing. Had an elderly Aunt/Uncle who in their '70,s did exactly this. Worst part is they were risking a lot and didn't really need the extra cash. Both had University pensions and social sec.and never any kids. Go figur.

The state of Michigan does not allow use of flashing or rotating amber lights on private vehicles. They can be used on public service vehicles, emergency, and snow removal equipment, school buses, contractors.

Our postal people can use them on their delivery cars in Georgia.

I guess at 12:30 am, the middle of the night, I could stand in the road and try to flag down the car. Of course that would mean I would have to be out there waiting for them.
