Hydraulic question

I was looking at some hydraulic control valves, because I'm thinking about adding hydraulics to one of my old tractors. The ones I looked at all had big red stickers on the box stating that the warranty would be void if Teflon tape was used. Just curious as to the reason for that. I've used it before on another tractor and also when putting new hoses on some cylinders. Is that going to be a problem? None of these get used that much.
What should one use instead?
There also different grades of Teflon tape. Would that make any difference?

Any snow at Janesville? We picked up about 8 inches the other day. Makes the pheasant hunting different for sure. Sue says Jim had gotten a few. About your Teflon tape. Their reasoning is that it comes off when removing hoses and plugs etc and then works it's way into the valve. I still use it on occasion if threads are really bad. I much prefer Loctite Teflon hydraulic thread sealer. It is sold at parts store, imp dealers etc. Not cheap but works good on nice dry threads. Deere sells it under their own part number but it is Loctite. Being Deere, the parts people may argue though.

HI Rich It depends what fittings you use, many of the hydraulic fittings have tapered threads which go together and form a no leak seal. The problem with teflon tape is if it gets into the system it is going to cause problems with hydraulic pumps or spool valves so you can see why the
company doesn't want it used. I am no expert and do not know of any sealants I think sealing high pressure would be an issue. I would talk to your local hydraulic shop they should be able to give you good advice, products and they should be the experts.

There are liquid thread sealers. The only threads that require sealer are the tapered pipe threads. O-ring boss, flat face boss & JIC fittings require no thread sealer.

Loctite 545 thread sealant. If your fittings are clean and can be left to cure before use this sealant will never leak. As others have said, tape can get into and foul the system.

The main reason is due to with Teflon tape if you use to much you can tighten the fittings tight enough to crack the valve body very easy,, the tape its self is not good flowing around in a hyd system either on the new systems, I only use it as the liquid stuff must be clean and oil free to stop leaks, I just use 1 1/2 wraps of tape no more and I do not over torque
cnt

A company that I worked for many years ago had a pump model that kept coming back for repair. They said that it was because of Teflon tape coming off a fitting used in installation, because it was being put on all the way to the end of the threads. Finally they changed the installation procedure to eliminate the tape and ignore the leak.

"Pieces of it will work their way into the valves, if you get too much on them."

I think we are talking about simple aftermarket spool valves, WHAT damage would a scrap of teflon tape do to them???????????

I'm gonna go with "Nutty" on this one... "The main reason is due to with Teflon tape if you use to much you can tighten the fittings tight enough to crack the valve body very easy"

I use probably two hundred rolls of thread tape a
year and I'm gonna say this much any product used
improperly or with to much force can cause
problems.
