How many of you fly model rockets or RC airplanes

I have done the smaller rockets myself had a friend that did very high power stuff. Dabbled a bit with RC aircraft but nothing to elaborate there. To day big thing is these drones quad copters.

I built and flew a lot of RC aircraft over the years. Sold everything several years ago. Can't find any of the photos at this time. Oh ya forgot to tell you i crashed a few too. LOL

I used to be really into the rocket thing as a kid.

How we didn't burn the entire state down is beyond me.

Just launching them got boring after the first dozen or so, so we kept going bigger... then started filling them with black powder so they'd blow up...

Emptying out illegally acquired fireworks (not legal here in Mass.) and filling big multi engine-rockets with that.

Had we tried that stuff today I'd probably be in Guantanamo.

One favorite trick used to be put a nose cone and fins on the engine and "fire it and forget it"!!!

I used to design and make my own about 47 years ago. These were short range toys that went 200- 400 feet. A lot of this was like early rocket history. Some went up and back down right on the pad or could not get air borne. Some flew 20-50 feet lost lift hit the ground. The last one however went out of sight like an Aerobee test rocket. The sound built up to a loud shriek just before it took off like a bat out of hell. My mom who watched the launch said "no"more when she saw the "advances I had made".

Sugar fuel makes a great solid cast motor.

No I don't do it, but on the right day I can watch over the fields to where a RC club has their hideout and watch them play with the expensive flying things(sized that they don't fit in a truck with out pulling the wings and tail)

I flew RC planes for many years and met with mixed success in the process. I became very good at making repairs due to the many crashes I had. But I have stopped this hobby due to my declining interest and the cost of the club membership.

I don't fly but have been to some of their events. The Jets over mid America is great to watch. Some of these planes cost way over my pay grade and way fast.
They have an 800 foot paved runway, once a piolet looking for the "real" airport landed there. He was able to fly it out ok. joe

They have actual run ways over there (750ft by 80ft) if that gives you an idea how big they are. Was told by someone that they have to stay below (I think they said) 200ft or the radar in Green Bay(around 50miles away) picks them up.

Kids,

Do not try this at home. Like JRSutton said. It is a wonder we did not burn down the house, woods, ourselves. Never heard or saw my last one land, but then we lived in a relatively isolated part of the county.

Now government and parents want to wrap children in bubble wrap and sponge rubber to them from harm at the same time limiting their imaginations. Life is inherently not safe and you can only go so far to maximize safety and minimize accidents.

The real threat comes from those intent on harm.

I was big into model rockets in high school. Even built the Estes Saturn V. That was quite a rocket. We even built and launched them at school for a science class. Can't imagine they would dare do that today with all the zero tolerance PC crud going on.
