i know that there has been plenty of posts about this , but instead of trying to find old ones, going to look a a 1 ton with the v-10 115k miles,, if you had/have one what your view of them,, pros/cons,, thinking of trasding off cummings, (yea i know i crazy, maybe) thinking for the minute.. thanks bob

CRAZY. If you had nothing I wouldn't condemn the v10 but owing a cummins diesel and trading to a v10 just don't make since to me . 2+2=too many stop smoking that stuff it is killing brain cells.

I have an 08 with 97k. Just had to replace the manifold studs and gaskets. Other than that, fill gas, change oil, add more gas... I get .5 mpg less than my previous diesel pulling the same load. Only time I notice less power is at first take off, after its rolling there's plenty of go. Might be different if I was in mountains, but none of that here.

I had one. I think it was a 1999 1 ton Superduty. Had it for a month and sold it. Not enough power for me. Gearing may have been wrong for my use.

My thoughts exactly!!!

Cummins are a powerful engine, and reliable, and known for running 300,000 miles! The V10 is not that great of an engine in my opinion. Less torque, less power, and WORSE fuel mileage!!!

Plus, well, a Cummins just sounds goooooood.... :)

my thoughts aren't mileage based or anything other than owner experience I own a 98' Dodge cab and chassis with a little over a million miles and I have owned ford and Chevy trucks in the meantime ,I paid 28000 for the dodge brand new and have spent several thousand keeping it going this far but hasn't been the trouble or expensive that the others had the ford was an 08 and the first motor at 37000 miles and the second shortly after 80000 . Then before that a couple chevys both nice but cp3 pumps and injectors were just killer so I think a man that has a cummins should keep it and a man that don't have a one ton should buy an older gas burner unless wealthy and has plenty of money to throw around . I am driving a Toyota as an everyday driver and don't want people to think that a man with a cub or l&g type tractor needs a one ton but some of us have larger toys and work that calls for something heavier as I do , fertilizer carts and large hay wagons don't do well behind Toyota's they normally require a heavy truck .

My 05 v-10 has 118,000 miles and runs great. I've had it nearly 2 years now. It will pull anything you can hook to it, but it is different from the diesels as you will need to get used to a bit higher rpms. I know of many of them with seversl hundred thousand trouble free miles on them. The early years are the ones that needed the manifolds and studs replaced, but I think it was in 2000 or 01 that they went to stainless studs and ended that problem and fixed the spark plug problem too.

the only real down is gas mileage, i helped a buddy move from the dallas tx area to central nm, he had a dodge 3/4 ton v-10, i had the first gen cumming dodge both of us were pulling 20 foot stock trailers probably about equal in weight give or take 500 lbs the cummins made the trip in 2 tanks of fuel, the dodge v-10 took 6 for the same trip

For a year and a half back in the mid 90's, I worked as a service advisor at a dodge dealership. The V-10 engine that was in dodge service at that time was built by Lamborghini. Just for a "run around" engine, it did okay. As the engine in a "working truck," it wasn't so good. The dealership sold one 3/4T "light duty" truck with the V-10 engine and after 6 months we replaced the engine due to crankshaft failure. The Lamborghini engine is a car engine with big numbers, but for truck use, its better to go with a proven truck engine, i.e. the Cummins engine or the 360 gas burner, or maybe a big block truck engine. You have the heavier duty transmission and rear end, may have to change motor mounts.
Good Luck!!!
