Rubber gasket sealer

My hydraulic resevoir has a cover that has a rubber strip that mates onto a metal ledge. The rubber is still intact but does not give a leak-proof seal anymore. So I'm wondering what would be a good sealant to mate the two surfaces? I have tried a black Permatex that went soft when the hyd oil was added.

I think you can get a plastic or rubber "U" shaped strip that was made to cover the raw edge of steel sheets from McMaster-Carr. Might be able to cut it to length to make a gasket of sorts.

They make that automotive silicone for all kinds of applications, Gm has a gray for timing covers, oil pans, thermostat housings, valve covers etc. Chryslers had one for trans pans. Main thing is clean the mounting surfaces perfectly, brakekleen them and blow out the bolt holes.

Thanks folks for the ideas.
I thought I'd try the simplest idea first, so I picked up a small piece of rubberized adhesive weather strip (waterproof). I cleaned both mating surfaces (as I did before) and used a brake cleaner just to be sure. The adhesive weather striping was easy to apply, I bolted everything in place, filled with hydraulic oil and ran the test. VOILA!! Not one leak!! It worked like a charm.
Sometimes simple solutions do the trick!

Sounds a lot more involved than High Tack. Keep an eye on it to be sure that it holds up to oil. most likely it is butyl, and I don't think that it stands up to oil.
