Oliver 77 puller project

I am currently looking at turning an Oliver 77 into a pulling tractor and considering putting a v8 engine in it or another larger engine. What are some recommendations of engines that would make the most power and performance for this application as well as be the simplest to fabricate and make work. Or am I better off to bore and stroke the stock engine?

I knew a guy many years ago that bolted
in a big hemi in his. He said it was
relatively simple to do. Back in the 70s
that was one hot pulling tractor. Today
it is just something to do. Here in
Texas there is still classes for them
though. Most here are putting big block
chevys in them.

There's a class for them here too.

My buddy put an old Ford 300 six in his 70. After his first 2-3 hooks he had to find a bigger clutch.

Antique pulling has come a long way in the last 20 years. You realize by putting a diffren engine ie v8 you change classes. And where you are going money rules, man willing to spend the most will be tough to beat. Days of cutting your tires and putting in some good gas are over, now there is no end to what some folks do to win. Twenty years ago I built MANY 44 maseys till I kept getting beat by 77 oliver then went that route. That stock 77 motor has a LOT of off the shelf soup up stuff out there. You can build that engine into a real horse if you want.

i actually had a friend suggest the straight 6 out of an old ford. But I JW if anyone had any experience or reasoning why maybe a big block Chevy, dodge or ford would be best or easiest to mock up. If I were to mod the stock engine. Any suggestions on where to start and some of the mods you have seen or know about?

There is a big Waukesha (427) that can be
made almost twice as big. Google baddest
antique in the world. Or the BoB series.
At least start with a 320. A RD engine in
a 460-560 IH will run with a small block.
But so will the big Oliver. There is a
pulling forum below.

Before you do anything talk to "chucksoliver77". He can get every last once of power out of an Oliver Waukapart engine. Best place to find him is on the Oliver board.
