Rim fun Making rim to fit a doodle bug

Ok so a guy has this Doodle bug and his rims are rusted past the point of repair. I have some good rims on had to I am having to take the centers out of both pair of rim then install the AA centers into the outer part of my good rims. These are all the old split rim type rims. One gave new meaning to split rims since when I was trying to break it down my truck tire bead breaker pulled the split rim part and part of the rim off. I am sure glad I have this air power bead breaker or I would still be beating on the fist one. Rivets are a pain to get out but on the rims I can see where they are on the inside so I drill them out part way then use a punch and drive them out

? So where is the question? What is it that you need help with?

personally I'd toss the split rims, hit a junk yard and find something cheap but safer - those things make me nervous.

On something as old as a Ford A or AA hard to come up with a rim that would work and not be a split or lock ring type rim. I have been doing that type of rim for decades so know how to do so safely if there is a safe way to do them that is

I like buying broken rims at auctions. Whether it"s the outer rim damaged or the center, I buy them, often for a buck. I drop the table on the drill press, drill out the welds to 5/8 or 3/4 inch, and weld together the good pieces of each. Beats $75-100 for a new rim.

One of the problems I have run into is wider 4 and 5 lug implement rims . The 4 lug rims like the ones on old balers that were 5;00x15 you know those skinny little tires they put on the pick up side of the baler. Short skinny deep dished and if the ground is moist they cut ruts in the field. So I founds a 14" car rim cut the center out then cut the center out of a 4 lug rim that was junk and weld the center into the 14" rim making it deep dish and it worked out perfect. I have made plenty of these rims for me and other people, I don't do them for other people any more for several reasons but I still do my own. Bandit
