td-6 steering cluthes

I just picked up a td-6 that has been sitting for some 20 years. The left steering clutch is froze up, stuck or just not working. Any ideas on how to get this working with out tearing it clear apart?

I had one frozen up on one of one of my tractors, when I went to pick it up. I just released the steering clutch, and stood on the brake real hard, and they released. If the clutch plates are in a sealed area, as a last resort fill it with cleaning solvent, and let it soak. My manual says use gasoline to clean the clutch plates. (can you imagine a manual with those instructions today) I have done this, and let the plates dry a day or so. Stan

I had one that we put against a big tree after driving around for an hour to warm things up. could not brake it loose. Had to put clutch out and take the pack apart and clean all the disc one by one. Put it back together and works fine now, like yours it sat for a long time not running. we found that the other steering clutch was free and moving but the pressure plate had broken so that had to come out and be rebuilt. also. oldiron29

I believe in tightening the adjustment as much as possible and running the machine back and forth while riding the brake to heat the drum. This must be done at a time when there is no liquid in the clutch compartment.
