Was doing some remodeling this week for some people and saw this picture hanging in the garage, he let me take a picture of it. I just think it is a neat photo showing the old time life. The shop was in Brush Valley, PA.

Neat, we have 3 pictures of my family with the oval frames, they are over 100 yrs old. One is my mother when she was a baby, she was born in 1915.

In my family the bubble glass frames were reserved for wedding pictures or funeral pictures. I'm not sure who started it, but there are wayyyyy too many pictures of dead people in caskets. I don't plan on continuing the tradition.

My grandmother was the same way. Anyone that died. Got a picture on the wall of her sitting room. When I found out they were all dead people. I never went into that room again.

Cleanest blacksmith shop that I ever saw. Probably took him 2 weeks to get it cleaned up for the pic.

That looks like a wood floor. How did the place not burn down? If you are working red hot steel on the anvil sparks will be flying. Looking at the forge in the background how do you keep from dropping a hot coal on the floor?

My great granddad was a blacksmith in Everly Iowa. A year ago while I was walking in the corridor of a local hospital I saw a picture of a blacksmith standing by the anvil holding a hammer. I stopped to look at this picture and I saw a caption saying 'Peter Frydenborg, Everly Iowa'. That was my great granddad! His shop wasn't nearly as neat as the one in your picture though.

I don't think wood floors were too uncommon. Especially in ships. You could always dip water out of the slack tub to put out sparks.

That is a very, very old teacher's desk in the right side of the picture.

My mom left one to me and the lower part is presently in our historical society in a schoolhouse museum.
The upper part is in my basement.
Seems like a very strange assortment of furniture and stuff for a blacksmith shop.
Interesting and wonderful picture!
