Ring gear on a John Deere D

I have 1946 John Deere D. The ring gear is wore out where the engine always stops. Can I spin the ring gear on the fly wheel ? How many degrees should I spin it ? Also which direction, clockwise or anticlockwise ?

One of the few tractors where you could heat the ring gear a bit in different places and with brass punch roll it possibly 90 degrees

on the old farmalls we would take it off flip it over and give it a slight turn -- new wear spots and afresh spot to engage -- now I know some can not be flipped over because of some sort of bevel on the starter side of the gear-- better look first --good luck my friend -- Roy

I removed mine, flipped it over, re-beveled the teeth, and put it on in a different spot. Still working fine, and that was in 1989.
