I can't go into details where I got the info, but there is a major college that offers free WI-Fi
to it's students. They can access it from their smart phones or lap-tops. So if the students are
logged in, the university keeps records of who, when and where it's students are at all times. If a
hacker tries to log in using a student's ID from a remote location, the student is kicked off Wi-Fi
and has to rest his password. This happens over 100,000 times a year.

Some might thing this is scary keeping track of students on campus, but it's necessary.

yea, like "sheltering in place" or stay on the "top floor". Also some self proscribed expert on tv this morning said; play dead or look around for something to use as a weapon.

Why? Necessary to protect students. IT security. Hackers are trying to get personal information.

Sorry. I simply cannot see how that protects anything except the college's snooping.
Students at a college are ADULTS. They are of legal age of majority. They are old enough to participate in choosing our leaders. In most cases, they are also old enough to buy their own alcohol. They are not going to be "stolen" as a small child or a baby would be.
College students are young adults in training for making a living in the world around them. And you say it is necessary to track their movements to "protect" them???? From what????? Somehow, I just cannot buy that one. Sounds more like trying to make our campuses into more of a "nanny state" then they already are.

You can call it what you like, but "necessary" is just off the charts.

Andy Martin Please explain how free Wi-Fi isn't free?????

I can think of a few that is very free and of no cost to the user.

BTW, please do not try to use the excuse...'Well, someone has to pay for the connection'.

The statement you posted was "As with everything else that is free, free Wi-Fi isn't free either." It is 'free', at no cost, to the end user.

Are they paying tuition? Then they are in fact paying for it. It's just hidden in the tech fees or tuition.

IT security at one college has over 100,000 student security breaches a year and the number is climbing each year. IT Security program knows when and where a student is when he is on campus either because of his smart phone or laptop is linked connected to Wi-Fi. Hackers from a different location, perhaps China or New York, logs in with student's password, the college's computer will lock them out and student will have to reset his password.

This is all part of keeping students private info private, which might also have parents info on file too. It could also be a backdoor for hackers to get into the colleges server and do more damage. Hackers have made good paying jobs for people who know something about IT Security..
