Fitting Needed

I want to put a 3/4 inch pipe fitting in the side of one of these plastic tanks inside a wire cage, I think they are called a "tote". There is about a four inch opening at the top. I had an idea to use something like a bathtub drain and feed it from the top with a string or wire. The trouble with a bathtub drain it may be too weak. I wonder if there is some kind of a fitting that is installed from the outside and expands when tightened from outside.

Does your tote have a drain at the bottom? Mine does, I made an adapter with the existing valve to a garden hose fitting. joe

I put another pipe fitting in the bottom of a weed sprayer tank, bought it from farm/fleet type of store, but had to fish it through the top opening. I think I used a metal rod pushed up from the new hole and out the top, then threaded the fitting on that to slide it down, then added the outside parts.

I don't know of any kind of expanding fitting like your looking for. That said, they do make fittings that are similar to the drain fittings your talking about called through-wall fittings. Some are going to have a seal on them, some aren't, though those without are usually called bulkhead fittings.

In either case, McMaster Carr ought to have whatever you need in stock. Clink below for a link to their site and some of the fittings like you need.

It would be stronger if you can adapt down the existing fitting they all have at the bottom.

What you are looking for is a bulkhead fitting.

Your thoughts on installing it are right, make the hole, fish a wire through and up, and slide the pieces down.
