Do I need gasket sealer on these shims?

I am working on the transmission of an Oliver super 88. The non adjustable bearings use a gasket on the cover. The adjustable bearings use shims under the cover. Do the shims need a gasket sealer to prevent gear oil leakage? Or are they tight enough when torqued down that they won't leak? This is in several places. Countershaft, bull pinion shafts, and axles all have tapered bearings adjustable by shimming the covers.

You must be living good! I have rebuilt several tractors and put those shims together clean and dry and they ALL have leaked afterward. :? It is not a bad leak, more of a seep, but it is still always oily around it with occasional drips.

I don't know what the solution is other than to try putting a layer of sealant behind the first shim.

I seal them. Fit them dry first, get the shims right, then apply a very thin coat of sealer. I use the Permatex aviation sealer, the brown liquid sealer.
