Oil stabilizers to cure blow by

Anyone have any luck with any of the products like Lucas oil stabilizer or Certach etc.? I have one old tractor that I don't want to spend much on but still want to cure at least some of the blow by.

I use Lucas and they make no clams that it would stop blow by. The only true way to fix blow by is an engine rebuild.

Yeah, I know it won't be fixed without a rebuild but the tractor is located on a place I own 8 miles from my home place and it is only used to put out hay once a week or so in the winter and clip the pasture where it's at a time or two in the summer months, 50 hours use per year maximum so I am mainly interested in slowing oil consumption and minimizing the chance of a runaway. I have another tractor which will be taking its place in a couple of years when I upgrade a hay cutting tractor.

I have actually had the best luck with good old STP oil treatment. It does seem to loosen stuck rings and such. Now this is mainly on smaller engines. On tractor engines I have found not much will stop blow by on them as the cause is usually worn piston/sleeve clearance. So there really is not much going to help that other than a rebuild.

About all you can do is run a heavier oil. Lucas is good stuff, but nothing is an actual "mechanic in a can".

I had some luck with Rislone Compression Repair With Ring Seal in an 8N Ford that I pull hard on a mower. I also used some Sea Foam in the gas for a while in case there were some stuck rings. Not sure if it was the Rislone, the Sea Foam, just good hard use or some combination of the 3 but there was considerable improvement in the blow by. For a few bucks it's worth a try.

I've never been a believer of "fix in a can" but when it comes to Lucas products I would rate them as your best bandaid chance.

I'd like to ask a couple of questions. 1 What kind and year of engine? 2 What kind and weight of oil are you using? 3 Gas or Diesel? . I use an oil stabilizer for several reasons in my older tractors and trucks and they have been doing fine for many years doing so. Baandit

Snake oil will not restore worn metal surfaces . It may swell some seals and gaskets to reduce leakage. A hard run may unstick stuck rings and reduce oil consumption .

It must be a diesel since he wants to minimize chance of runaway????

I had an 1800 oliver that would use a gallon of oil in the morning just baling hay. I found STP in gallon jugs, 1 gallon in the crank case slowed that substantially.
