case 5120 trans problem

Hi there, The problem is when you put it in gear it only goes forward or back about an inch but if you muck around with it and put in gear and let clutch a few times it will go but then if you put heaps of revs it stops driving and the check power shift indicator comes on and stays on until you put your foot on the clutch. but if you drive it slowly up through the powershift it goes ok and then it will just stop for no reason in no partial powershift number. hope some one out there has an idea what the problem is Thanks Hamish

I am not real familiar with a CIH 5120 but have been around them some. Before I would get too in depth in any thing I would change the transmission filters and make sure the oil level is topped off. These tractors are sensitive to plugged or restricted filters. IRC the power shift control valve is a manual one not electronic. If the filters are not your issue then I would say there is a control valve sticking in the valve body.

I am sure there are fellow that will have more recent knowledge of this tractor. It has been 10 years or more since I worked on one. They really did not seem to have many issue around here. There are a few on some livestock farms with pretty high hours, 10-12K range.

I have a 5230. I assume they're much the same. I can try to share my experience. But I doubt I can remember it all at one time, and type it all out here. So possibly you would want to e-mail me, so we could then eventually talk? But does NZ mean you are in New Zealand?

When I bought mine used, it would go, but it had problems. I only bought it because I knew someone who could fix it. He replaced the power shift module, and a particular little ground wire connection through one of the big plugs in the bottom of the cab. He knew of the ground wire weakness. This tractor has little brown ground(maybe earth to you!) wires all over. Some of them go right to the battery. That was a major mistake, as when the battery cable corrodes a little, the whole system can try to ground through one of these little wires. Then it's fry time.

I have over time replaced about every solenoid on the back of this tractor. Forward, reverse, PTO, MFWD, diff. lock, and there are three of them on the 3 point valve! There is a bank of solenoids down on the side which do the actual power shifting, and they have been trouble free. There is a temp., or pressure sensor on the filter housing, hidden behind the battery box, which needs to be hooked up, or you won't get far.

Hopefully you can find someone familiar with these, as I expect that will be necessary.

My first thought is to run a new ground
(earth) wire from.the cab to the frame, and
probably from the frame to the battery as
well, seen a few of these series of
tractors give issues with bad grounds...
Next question is do the rest of the
hydraulic functions work 3 point hitch,
loader (if it has one)?
Does the powerahift light flash, or just
glow steady when it comes on? If it
flashes, count the flashes, that will tell
you what kind of issue the tractor thinks
it is... I'd have to look it up, but if the
light flashes let us know.

Hi there the powershift light just comes on a steady glow

hi there yes I am in new Zealand do you have skype?

So the check trans light if it on steady
indicates the control module has received
none or multiple shift signals. This is the
same as a single flash... Four flashes are
a bad powerahift solenoid. Six flashes no
clutch pressure...

Not sure if you have checked for a bad
ground or not, that would be my first
check/fix, otherwise it is possible that
the shift controller is playing up, its
under the powerahift lever, has a
mechanical linkage to it unless you have a
very later model that may have a rocker
switch for the powershift on the range
shifter.

It is possible to test the module with a volt meter... Email me by clicking on the link and I can copy the pages and email them too you...
