OT--Help with forgetting someone's name

I was born in 1945--yeah I am old and frequently forget names of friends I worked with for years--and other names.
Several years ago, some of you may remember Ann Landers. Very smart columnist always giving advise.
On forgetting names, she suggested to just set down and relax and picture the person in your mind. Slowly Go through the alphabet A------B----C ----etc. and when you reach a letter that sparks a memory, that letter is usually the first letter of the person's first or last name.
It works for me every time! Amazing!

I find that as I get older there are more things I have trouble remembering. It bugs me when it happens. It can be the most common thing too. I have had to look at my drivers license to make sure I was writing my box number down right. I have a habit of transposing the first two numbers. Makes you look like a moron when it happens. LOL Well no more than usual. LOL

I was gifted with a naturally horrible
memory. I probably remember less than you
guys who are 20-30 years older. So I was
very surprised one day at the bank when they
asked for an account number and off the top
my head I gave it to them. Only to find out
it was my account number from 10 years
earlier.

Ann Landers and Abigail Van Buren. The wife of a guy that I worked with wrote one of them and the letter got published. One day I'm at work and reading the paper and for whatever reason read the column. This lady writes in and says that here husband got this large breed puppy (Labrador)and he works all of the time and the dog grew into a huge brute and terrorizes their four daughters and is knocking stuff down and all kinds of other bad stuff, and what is she supposed to do. I read that and think, no way, but that has got to be my buddy Ray. I go to see Ray, walk into his office and stand there laughing as he sitting at his desk looking at me. "Ray, you're not going to believe this' I open the story and show it to him, "If I didn't know any better, that's got to be you and your dog Jackson". He opened his desk, pulls out an envelope and pulls out a letter with this big special official Ann Landers or Dear Abby seal. It was Ray.

I have always been horrible with peoples names. I can usually remember what all tractors they have though.

I always remember the face but most times can't call the name till afterwards, so its just hey dude, or hi guy, or hi bub.

For those of us with "Sometimers" it really isn't all that unusual to forget names. There are phone numbers stuck in my head
from 1960's but names are tough. I'm sure that is why some people call everybody Bud or Pal or Chief. Cause they can't
remember either.

Yep--kind of hard to ask them to wait just a minute, set down, close eyes, and A--B--C-----then get up and call them by their name.

I guess that Ann Landers knew a lot of people - and they all came to the airport to see her off on a flight out of Minneapolis. I was going out on the same flight on a business trip but those people had the departure area jammed and I had a tough time getting to the boarding gate.

I had a close connection to make in Omaha where she was getting off. Her friends, family, fans, or whatever they were, jammed the de-planning area and I had to yell at them to let the departing passengers through. Told them to NOT jam up the aisles, but those people wouldn't give an inch. Wish that I'd had time to call the police. I do not have good memories of Ann Landers after that episode.

I talked to a salesman for a few minutes a lot of years ago.

He said, "Hi, my names Bill Rowley. BILL - like a duck picks its hinder with... and ROWLEY, like Roly-Poly. I STILL remember that guys name... 37 years later. LOL

So now when meeting someone, I make a conscious effort to "connect" their name to a word picture or to another person I already know with a similar name. It's a helpful memory tool to me.

Sandy - like a sandbox

Carol - like a Christmas carol

Jim - like Jim-Bob

Ron - like Ron Peterson (or some other Ron we might know)

Charles - like the prince

I agree as I have a VERY unusual name. When I meet someone, I state my full name and then give reference to a nearby County by the same first name and a nearby town same as last name.
When I see them again, they call me by name even though I may have forgotten theirs!

I thought for a moment there, that you were trying to FORGET someones name. I believe we all know a few like that. When I was a kid, the family called me "Buddy", as I got older, many of the neighbors had trouble remembering my name (Lowell), so when they found what my nickname was, I was known in the neighborhood as "Buddy" Hilton.

The mind remembers sight/pictures perfectly so the best way is to make a mental picture of a particular feature of the person you want to remember and put it with their name. Example would be "Betty"....first thing you noticed about her was her huge "hooters" so you close your eyes and "record" a picture of her wearing a shirt with "Betty B00bs" wrote on it. It will work every time because your mind WILL remember photographic creations you enter into it long before letters/numerals. You will remember landmarks easier than written directions to get somewhere. It will usually be something less than flattering that you use to remember names so DO NOT tell the person how you do it! Must be a VIVID picture!

The good thing about getting old is you forget things and don't have as much to clutter your brain. The bad thing about getting old is all the
pretty girls call you mister. When I worked for the phone co, I was pretty good at remembering names and phone numbers. Somebody asked
me a while back if I could still remember phone numbers. I told them I could because the numbers are the same. I just don't know who will
answer now. Tommy

Kenny Gray was a colorful and well known politician here in Southern Illinois. He was in a parade in DuQuoin, Illinois, when a bystander hollered at him. Kenny, being the politician that he was, hollered and waved back at the guy. The guy wanted to put him on the spot, so he kept hollering, "What's my name, Kenny?" Kenny hollered, "Somebody call an ambulance for that guy - he can't remember his own name".

I remember names bye what type of farm tractor they own. Some times the classic cars they own and what car club they belong to. I know this sounds wierd but I have this hobby that I work on farm equipment and classic cars. I see there faces and I place it with what I know they own. Most people can not belive it but I just got it down.

A joke I [i:654c4848f0] sort of[/i:654c4848f0] remembered, but had to use google to get the details:

An elderly married couple were being visited by some friends, who were also an elderly married couple. After lunch they decided to go for a walk.

The two men walked side by side, a few paces ahead of the two women, who were deeply engrossed in conversation about the effectiveness of anti ageing creams.

One of the old men said to his friend, "You know last night we went to one of the best restaurants I've ever visited, the food and service were fantastic. You should both go there some time, it is a very romantic place to take your wife to dinner".

The second old man replied "That sounds great, where is it? What is it called?"

The first old man thought for a moment and then admitted "You know, having married late and having been married to the same woman for over fifty years, I've reached an age where my memory is not what it used to be. But my wife and I recently took a memory seminar, where the guy showed us tricks to remember things like this. Let me show you how it works: What is the name of that red flower with a thorny stem, that men give to their loved ones on Valentines day?"

The second old man replied "I guess you must mean a rose?"

The first old man nodded and said "Yes that's it, a rose".

He then turned his head and called to his wife, "Rose, honey, what was the name of that restaurant we went to last night?".

There was a priest around here many years ago, when everyone pretty much lived on farms, who, if he couldn't remember the name of who he was talking to, would ask about their neighbour. If that didn't help, he'd say " no, the one on the other side"

I can remember long numbers from decades ago that I have absolutely no application or need for today.
When it comes to names I seem to have a selective memory.
I always tell people;
If you have ticked me off or owe me money I will remember your full name and how to spell it, so if I have forgotten your name again consider it a compliment.
