2001 chevy duramax limp mode

I'm thinking about going to look at this truck to haul my tractor with I know the ad says 8500 but he told me 7200 its got just over 200000 miles on it my only question is he said a couple years ago he left it sit for a year and started it and it was in limp mode he took it to a shop and they said there was algae in the fuel system said it cost him 400 they cleaned it all out and it was running good fast forward a year or 2 and he let it sit for a coupe months and went to start it and its in limp mode again he thinks its the same thing what do you guys think?

Probably the same thing, but why after only a couple months? Seems fast to me. If it's in fuel related limp more, it will only rev to about 2000rpms and allow shifting.

That's what he described he said he could bring somewhere for me to see in town where lives it just won't go over 2000 rpms is that a bad price?

There are two kinds of limp mod on a duramax- engine limp and transmission limp.

engine limp- truck usually runs and shift, but wont rev above 2000 rpms, on the newer trucks is will say "engine power reduced" but im not sure on the 2001 if the cluster said that.

trans limp- usually leaves you stuck in only 3rd gear.

a code scanner would be your friend. if it is truly in limp mode, you should be able to pull a code. any PO700 code would be trans related.

being you already know it wont rev, then good chance its fuel related.

also, the 2001-2002 trucks are a bot of an oddball. a lot of the wiring, and a few other things, are specific to those years.

I would also want to know how old the injectors are. the 2001-2004 duramax trucks are know for eating injectors. at 200k miles that truck may likely be on its 3rd or 4th set. a replacement set of injectors is a very costly repair.

check the oil, if its overfilled it probably has diesel in the oil, which means injector problems.

that price is ok if the injectors are good. a set of injectors is 2000 if you can do the job yourself, easily double that if paying a shop

I drive a highly modified duramax everyday so feel free to ask anymore questions

If he is buying cheep fuel from one of the southern states it would be possiable to believe. premium diesel already has the algaecide added at the point of origin.

A 15 year old truck , 200,000 miles and an early Duramax . That is called inviting trouble into your life. Buddy of mine just spent $4400.00 US on his 2004 with injectors and a couple of fuel lines.
Over the next 10 years you will spend less money purchasing a new SLE with the Max Towing package and the 5.3 .vs 2001. In 10 years the 2016 will still be worth a little bit . The 2001 will be scrap before then.

I guess you also think the 5.3L gasoline engine will pull the same load getting as good or better fuel mileage too!!!!!!!!!

Fuel filter is probably plugged. Fuel filter on a D-max should be changed every 15K tops. If it stops up, the rpm becomes limited due to fuel starvation. Run it too long like that and the pump will die, staving for fuel means starving for lube also. Not a bad price if it still has rockers and cab corners.

I've got a 2001 duramax 1 ton pickup 4x4 I bought new. It has 62000 miles. Mostly sets in the barn hooked to a gooseneck trailer I use to haul antique tractors around.
I thought about upgrading, but they don't want my truck. A new ones probably around 60000.

They only extended the warranty. I just put new injectors in mine on my own nickel. Overall I've been very happy with the truck.

(quoted from post at 16:59:02 11/18/15) 2004 Duramax engines with injector issues are covered under warranty

not anymore they are not. GM extended the warranty to 10 years, 200,000 miles I believe on all LB7 duramax trucks.

consider the last LB7 was made in mid 2004, all trucks are now out of warranty
