O.T. 2003 Ford Focus halfshaft carrier bearing

I have quite a whine, that I traced to the carrier bearing/mount on the passenger side halfshaft. According to what I read on the net, that was not uncommon. I also saw that there was a retrofit including something to do with the bearing mount. Have any of you dealt with this? I hate to just replace the bearing if there is more to it than just the bearing. I also hate to spend more than is necessary to correct the problem.
Thanks, Roy

Probably a cv joint noisey. Is the rubber boot cracked. Just get a rebuilt shaft.

Never heard a cv joint "whine", they normally "click, click, click" when turning tightly left or right if bad, whining would be a bearing imo.

I have a grease pit in my shop. I raised and blocked the car up and put it in drive with one wheel off the ground at a time. I went down underneath and used a water pipe stethoscope and checked wheel bearings, cv joints and the carrier bearing. All except the carrier bearing were making normal bearing sounds.

Got an 01, replaced the right halfshaft at 225k miles because of that bearing. Bought mine at Autozone, got 330K on it now, still good. Lifetime warranty on it.

A rebuilt shaft is around $65...maybe you could just replace the bearing, but for what has to come apart to replace it, I just put in the whole rebuilt shaft.

I ordered a halfshaft Tuesday and will pick up to install this weekend. I assume it is going to do the job and I will post if I am wrong.
Thanks for the suggestions. Sometime I make the wrong assumption and I hope this is not one of those times.
