Rear Admirals Daniel Callahan, and Norman Scott are both killed in the 1st naval battle of Guadalcanal - the worst butt kicking the US Navy has ever recieved.
They are both post humously awarded the Medal of Honor.

It wasn't the worst but kicking the US Navy ever received, it was a victory in as much as they stopped the Japanese from shelling Henderson field. Callahan's force was badly mauled, but they disabled a Japanese battleship to the point it needed to be scuttled, and damaged enough other ships that the Japanese task force had to withdraw. It is considered a US victory.
