would you guys get this?

Its about 3/1/2 hours away so I'd have to be pretty committed to buying it if I went to look at it I thought it'd be a cheap project for a few months and if I'd get it running sell for about 1500? What do you guys think?

I think it looks OK to me, I like yellow wheels on what I buy but I think that might make a money maker..

I have yet to figure out how to make money with old tractors. I would be lucky to break even on that tractor. I wouldn't be happy just getting it running. I would want to make sure it was reliable and I wasn't passing on a future problem to someone else. Before long I would have $4000 in that thing and be lucky to sell it for $2500.

I bought a Case VAC a few years ago that was only a mile down the road. Drove it home. Paid $600 for it. I am thinking how can I go wrong. Well by the time the I put new tires on it, rebuilt the engine, put a 3 point hitch on it and fixed everything my total is $4000. Love the tractor but will never break even on it. The first time I put it to work running a mower it burned about a quart of oil and hour. I drove the tractor back in the shed and turned it off. I heard hissing from both rear tires. Looked and both rears had split out from dry rot at the same time.

I think you're buying the lawn mower. I don't think you'd ever get more than the $800 back for a 70 no matter how much you put in to it.

Impossible to say without knowing what needs "fixing".

I'd probably sell the mower and the tractor separately though. I'm not sure if anybody who wants to bother mowing grass wants to leave tread marks all over it. Putting turf tires on it would double the price of the tractor.

If it were close by you probably could make a little money off of it by parting it out, or if you know someone who needed the parts for one. Otherwise no.

absolutely.

Buying for 800 selling for 1500?

That's 700 profit.

You've got 7 hours of driving, probably 1 hour of loading/unloading... Call it $100 of gas all said and done..

You've now got 8 hours into it, and you're down to $600 profit... And you haven't even turned a wrench yet.

Figured it's a given you'll put new oil and filter in - new plugs - probably points... You're now down to $500 profit...

If it needs so much as a head gasket, you're going to be hoping to break minimum wage for your efforts.

A cracked head, or even stuck rings - you'll be wishing you never saw the ad.

I mean - unless you LIKE doing the work and you can justify the loss as "the price of having fun" - I get it. But - I'm afraid you'll have to save the "I'll make money with it" justification for the wife! We ain't buying it here. :)

I wouldn't touch it for that price even if it was Red... :p

Looks to me like the rear tires are trash, fronts are so so. Grill has taken a beating.

Personally, I would pay $400 for it at the very most, UNLESS I KNEW I could make bank off of the mower (which I have no idea what it is worth???)

Unless he comes down, stay away from it... Bryce

I've got a 39 70 here that I bought for $250 and drove off the trailer after I cleaned the carb. It just sits in the tool shed. It's got a good set of Wards Riverside 11x40 tires on it. I haven't even had it started in four or five years. I don't know why I can't get excited about that tractor. I've had it for probably 15 years.
I had a chance to buy one with an older restoration a few years ago for $600 delivered, but I passed.

Had a pair of 40" tires very hard to find usable ones they were in fair shape$350. $300 just for the tires depending on condition plus rims $125 ea. again depending on condition maybe more.It looks like you have a set of side tins if good $200. I would by it to part out for that kind of money. Guy near me just spent $350 on his head to have it worked over as seats were bad. You would come out but not make a bundle.

I would at that price if it was one of the earlier 70's with the "Hart-Parr" grill. Have been looking for a while with no luck!

That said, I don't see any daylight to buy and re-sell. Old tractor market is slow right now.
Also remember that they were all parked for a reason; sometimes it's minor and sometimes it's pretty bad.

Too much of a gamble on a non-runner unless it's something you want to collect.

And when I say turf tires would double the price - I meant YOUR cost. I really don't think you ever make it back.

Hi
I wouldn't bother, I bet that mowers in pretty bad shape, with the rust thats on it and the fact it has sat quite a while with all that old grass sitting on top. probably starting to rot right through under there and belts/bearings, and blade condition would be a question. as far as the tractor goes, Open ended money pit comes to mind.
The reason I quit doing this stuff was the only guys with money at the end was the original seller, the parts guy and the fuel companys. plus some days If i had a $1000 for every complete time wasting low balling clown,( "Yeah i'm going to sell you a $15000.00 perfect tractor for $5000.00"), or guys that were bored with no interest and just out for a ride and chat. Or a load of "put these $2000 options on for me," and I'll be back with a check" guys that wouldn't leave a deposit!. I wouldn't of needed to sell the tractor. sometimes it would of been nice if the 49th guy in the yard that bought it, was the First!.

Hi ndbjda
Don't forget he's got to buy and haul it home then part it out, the stuff nobody wants or can't sell is scrap. As of now thats more liability than money with poor prices. The tires look rough with weather damage from what i see, in the picture and from experience after driving them round for a while, so the money probably isn't there.
The argument of what a head cost to re work is not really valid in my opinion. The guy paid $350 for his own head that if done right should be like new.

So many times I phoned wreckers looking for good used cranks and heads, so I didn't spend real mega $ on my worn ones. Truth was they wanted $500 for used parts no better than what I already owned in some cases. Plus re working cost on top so $850 plus some of them would of cost me. Unless what I had couldn't be repaired for $350 or what ever, I just wrote the check for mine . I could mostly find repairable oor good usable heads or cranks around cheaper on other complete tractors for a few more $ than the wreckers wanted for just a couple of parts.

I got a shed full of other fordson major parts like wheels linkage and other stuff doing that. It owes me nothing after using the initial parts. I will end up using the other real nice stuff restoring my other tractors in my collection one day, or helping guys looking for stuff.
Wrecking tractors is not easy money. When prices were good, the best yard I deal with probably shipped out about $250.000 of scrap( parts or old tractors) that was no good or nobody wanted, from whats gone and what i can figure out he had from what he has let slip . Then spent the money re stocking with newer stuff!.
regards Robert

The thing about this one is that those were Oliver's highest production tractor ever. You can go on CL anywhere and find them whole or for parts all day any day. They're just not worth more than weight x scrap price. I've got one down back that I bought just for the fenders and one tire. Plus some other piles of parts that I've picked up at consignment sales on the first bid because people brought the stuff in mistakenly thinking it would bring something.

I beg to differ. It depends on your ground type a lot. At my place we get a lot of water in the spring and even thru summer here lately. A big mower ruts the heck out of the place !

I must say I am surprised... 3 Years ago I purchaced a model 70, it had a new holland mower
with caster cobbled & mounted on the back. The tractor didn't run or wouldn't start. It looked
worse that this tractor but It did have one better rear tire that I needed. It was newer I assume
because it had a distributor. After points condenser, plugs & a few home made wires I got it
running on all six. Changed oils, removed the tire & mounted a poorer one in it place. Junked
the mower or parted it out & saved what I could. Scubbed it up & posted a forsale sign on it.
Sold it in 2 days for 1250.00 to be used as a wood hauler. The man who bought still use's it as
a wood hauler, since then he's bought a wood wagon and a set of tire chains from me for the
70.. maybe I was lucky? I'd still might take the chance again if I could really check out the
machine. All I really tinker with is John Deeres, but I've owned a Oliver 60 for 6 months & Allis
Chamlers B for 3 months & a Oliver 70 for about 2 months. Didn't loose any money on any of them.
I have lost my butt on a couple deeres....... & Curantly loosing it on a 1944 John Deere A....

Here's a letter he sent me after I wrote him on the first of november:

Sorry I don't check email very often. I don't see any cracks or welds, not sure when it last ran because I got it from a family friend. It was her dads and I picked it up after his passing. I did do a once over and tried to get it running, it cranks over fine and has oil pressure, but no spark. I pulled off the mag cap and it's all rusty inside the mag, hence the reason for no spark. The deck bearings seem to be good and free, I did grease them with a grease gun, the deck is solid only surface rust. The belt is there but probably needs replaced. If your still interested and have more questions let me know, my wife will notify me when I have email. Lol
Thanks Chad
