Cat engine breaking manifold studs part 3

The manifold was stuck. Had to get it pretty darned warm to get it apart, not red but really warm and as soon as he took the rosebud off of it she tightened back up again so he had to hold the flame on it till I would wiggle and twist it apart. It's sitting in three pieces on the bench cooling till tomorrow. It does not have sealing rings. Also, we drilled out the second broken stud, it worked fine but when I went to blow out the last little bit with the torch I blew out REPAIR THREADS someone else had installed. I have enough of the repair threads left to try to match something up. It's not helicoil.

I remember Cummins having sealing rings, but not Cat.That being said, make sure the sections are loose.I mean very loose and so free they spin around by their own weight. After all the trouble, though, I would really consider a reman manifold from Cat(if it is available). But very definitely use genuine Cat studs.Good luck,Mark

Thanks. A local truck shop recommends a Bully Dog ceramic manifold for Cummims but I'm not sure about Cats. They claim the inside of the ceramic manifold is smoother for better flow and cooler temps. It lightens the pocketbook by $1200 for a Cummins manifold.

Read your previous post tonight. Had that problem on a 3406. Dealer told me the 3 piece manifold had to be loose as that was what was causing the problem.

Might be a timesert ? GM dealer had a kit full of them as they are better than a helicoil especially for aluminum.

When you price a manifold from CAT they are only 300$ more for a FAR MORE SUPERIOR PRODUCT. The aftermarket has thicker flanges and larger diameter ports and a whole lot better quality of material for casting. When mine go's out I will be buying one and be happy with the increase of MPG.
