ot trailer brake question

i lost all the electric brakes on one of my farm trailers today it had been working fine, i found i have a signal off the controller to the plug on the truck, and thru the plug on the trailer, its all seems to be connected under the trailer, the brake backing plate connectors are the usual cheap snap locks, but all 4 wheels wouldn't fail at the same time, [4 braked wheels on the trailer,], i cant tell if i have current to the backing plates right now as im by myself, but what i did find was inside the breakaway box the 2 wires to the breakaway battery were corroded in 2 and the battery box was full of water, the battery probably isnt any good now, but does this circuit have to be complete in order for normal braking to happen?

"i cant tell if i have current to the backing plates right now as im by myself,"
Come on,any shade tree knows how to put a bag of sand or a short 2x on the break pedal.

It all depends on how it's wired of course, but in most cases the battery is a separate issue. You are making a common mistake for folks diagnosing electric brakes by jumping around. Start at one end and make sure Each part works then move on to the next. I always use a battery charger to test the brakes once I know the problem is on the trailer. Take the plug apart and hook the charger there, then trace the power back. A low amp charger won't over heat the wires. You will need the older mechanical type charger tho.

Forgot to mention that 75% of the time the problem is on the ground side, so check those conections carefully. Make sure you hook the charger ground to the cable and not the trailer frame so you find any grounding problems.

"the brake backing plate connectors are the usual cheap snap locks"

I think these connectors should not be used anywhere. They corrode all the way up inside the insulation of the wire. They only work temporary.
