John Deere 302A engine problems

I have a John Deer 302AD and I have a problem. It has about 5,000 hours. It urns fine for about half an hour and then starts to run rougher and rougher until it will barely even idle and by then sounds like its running on only one cylinder. The exhaust gets darker with a puff of grey in between.

Any ideas on what I should start checking?

I think you have something restricting the fuel to the injection pump. It sounds like you might have a spider egg sac or dead bugs in the diesel tank. when they get stirred up, they eventually block the flow of fuel, but after a while of not running, they float away from the inlet screen in the tank.

I agree that it sounds as if tractor has poor fuel flow to inj pump or possibly plugged check valve in inj pump return line fitting. Loosen the 2 screws(parts key 20) on timing cover then be sure gasket is loose from housing. Now start engine and see if it runs better. You'll loose a little fuel but not much.

I have had the same problem on generators. Most of the time it was clogged fuel line or filter. When I found item 9 plugged up. The engine would run
about a minute, slow down and quit. I would also check the return line. If you pull item 9 and find bits of rubber. Pump needs an overhaul.

I would check the air filter. It sounds as if you are choking the engine for lack of air. I doubt it is a fuel issue because it would not run for thirty minutes before acting up. Happy farming.

just a bit more info, I walked up and checked the radiator fluid and it was low, black and sludgy with some gray. I haven't had time to look at anything els but I hope to get to it this weekend. I had to start it up to move it and it started rite up and ran fine for the time I needed it to.
On a better note, I got the foundation for my new shop pored today :D
