Leaves have fell so I could see hornets paper nest 30 ft from our door since we have had 3 killing frost would it be safe to say there is no life in it thanks for advice

I had that same idea one time. Had a big low hanging one in a tree by my back door. It had them big white and black hornets in it. I waited until after a couple good frosts and went out early one morning and knocked it down with a rake, didn't get stung, but about half of them were buzzing around me.

It would depend on what type nest it is.

If it's a hive type, a paper ball with an access hole, they are in there!

If it's the open bottom comb type they are probably gone, but might be hiding on top of the nest or in the tree leaves if any leaves are left.

We don't have them in the immediate area where I live here in NWIA, or I haven't heard of any. First time I saw a hive like that was a third of the way up into Saskatchewan just south of Prince Albert. If they can survive up there they must be pretty tough.

You've got to be kidding me. What do you think a 12 ga with a cylinder choke and #9 shot is for? It doesn't get more satisfying.

Falling leaves revealed a big paper nest 10 feet from my shop door. The center was gone, nobody home.

Tie a trash bag around it and in a few days take it down. they will be dead if there is any. Spray it with clear lacquer and display!

Ha - exactly what I would have done as a kid. Takes a few tries to realize bees fly a whole lot faster than you can run - and they WILL chase you.

Even learning that lesson... It was always hard to resist the urge.

Thats funny you say that. Way back in the day i had a foreman to spot a hornets nest and wanted to take it home. So he had the brite idea to spry it with starting fluid then bagged it up in a plastic trash bag and took it home. after a little while of being in the house and out of the bag all those sleepy hornets woke up and was all in the mans house. He said took forever to kill all the hornets. The starting fluid just put them to sleep. Was a true funny story.

I just took one down a 20 inch hive that I could reach from our second floor back deck. 15 ft from the back door and we passed under it many times a day going to the barn. White faced hornets - nasty biters - but unmollested we had no problems all summer. I encourage wasps and hornets because they eat insects. So long as they're not in a traffic area (or hidden in equipment - Youch!)

Mine were alive but groggy - so I split the hive and gave them to the chickens. I use the "paper" from the nest for wadding in my flintlock fowler.

Came home off the road one summer and found a large nest of the white face hornets on one of the two garage doors. I used the other door beside it, worked on vehicles outside in front of it, walked around it, none of them ever bothered me and I didn't bother them. I left again after a couple of weeks. When I stopped in again a few months later in the fall some critter had cleaned out the nest.

If they haven't been a problem all summer, why start a problem now?

I've taken down several each year in the late fall or winter. There was one last year about the size of a basketball inside a shed right next to the door. Passed by it a half dozen times inches from my head before I noticed a hornet buzzing around. I waited until winter and took it down. All paper, no hornets.
