ot using kids to campaign

Thoughts on this . One of my girls had had her councilor at school ask several of the kids in her groups to hand out campaign flyers for her nephew who is running for Mayor here. Also they were told by councilor that they would be given "silver Cord Credit " for volanteering . They were given these after school hours, but at school . They were given a map of where to hand them out, door to door.If no body home set them inside screen door. I recently found out there are six registered offenders in the area my daughter was to hand out flyers . No other candidates were given this change . Turns out , he won the election, stated in paper that there are some who are trying to smear his campaign by making this an issue. Never met the guy , may be great mayor, may not be . I do object to using kids for this, giving them credit to campaign for one party over another. Also sending them into areas to knock on doors where seex offenders live. Deal has escalated pretty big,was on WMT radio Simon Conway show and more are calling about it. Iowa ethics board called for info . Doubt anything will come of that. He is a lawyer and ethics board is made up of lawyers. Mayor elect has friends calling me asking how to make this go away now? It's kind of out of my hands now. I'd be happy with apology to my daughter from him , her councilor, and written policy from school board and city council to make sure this never happens again .

I believe you are absolutely correct. It may be under the guise of teaching civic duty but more than likely the children had no idea what the candidates platform was or even cared. I take it there was no adult supervision which is problematic if any of the children were injured crossing the street, kidnapped, assaulted etc. I would ask whose decision it was, the counselor or candidate (he made not have known). Obviously, whoever made the decision needs to be instructed on ethics. Whoever made the decision should be man up and admit that he did not think it through and apologize to you, your daughter, the children involved and a letter to their parents. He or she has probably already apologized to his or her school administrator. Your request for apologies and policy is perfectly appropriate. Wish you the best!

I agree with your thoughts exactly. Door to door politics is OK with 2 restrictions 1) voting age only, and with freedom to choose between all candidates for the task, 2 Knowledge of DO NOT KNOCK houses or apartments. In my opinion there was risk and partisan politics fouling this event. Jim

They're sweating because what they did was illegal if the counselor asked them during school hours. Even if handing out the flyers was done after school the employees cannot campaign in the school and especially not during the day.

I agree. This is illegal and unethical and immoral. I'd be wanting someones head on a platter.

Almost as bad, we have the "D" running a campaign against nnalert, using kids swearing, giving the finger. Where are those parents?

Thank you for the great replies. I didn't want this to go this far but after it was getting swept under the rug I wanted to make sure people were aware of it . Half the town is thanking me the other half calling me trouble maker , lol I can live with that .

If the new mayor had anything to do with this, or condones it, he will NOT be a good mayor. Sounds like Chicago politics to me.

To me that's totally unacceptable. I remember my sister, in 1st grade, bringing home a flyer from school when Kennedy was running against Nixon that her teacher had given her class. She was supposed to tell out parents that Kennedy was a good, honest upstanding man and Nixon was a crook. I also remember my dad being very angry about it! Involving kids, not yet old enough to vote in a political campaign is just wrong. Having them hand out flyers, unsupervised just makes it worse.

I would be on this like stink on poo!

Parents should have voiced their concern when their child was handed the brochure.

I remember a few years back when external_link was elected and the commie union public school teacher was teaching one of our sons the "external_link OOOMMM OOOOMMM Good" song. My son was 6 at the time and came home with telling us about it. I taught him some replacement words that I can't put on this website to sing along. Wife got a call - for some reason they didn't call me - about our son using "disparaging language" in class. The problem is my wife (a non NEA teacher) is even more hard core than me when it comes to kids and how the system works. The whole thing went away real quick.

Not relative, but a little humor. My dad and his buddy almost got in trouble during high school by putting Roosevelt stickers up. The principal, a nnalert, caught them and was escorting them. The gym coach, a nnalert, stopped the group and asked the principal what they did. The principal told the coach what they did, the coaches response was "what is wrong with that". The coach and the principal then got into a heated argument. My dad and his buddy sneaked back to class and never heard another word about the incident.
