New Disc, Need Info..

Picked up this Disc last night. A fried of my dads (and mine I suppose) has been using it on about 7 acres, once every 4 years for 15 or 20 years! So, it has had minimal use in the past few years...

It is a J.I. Case for sure, I have spotted the "Eagle" on a few of the cast parts, and the coloring sure does give it away too!

What I am confused on though, is the gear box!? I have NEVER heard of, or seen a disc like this, with a gear box?

From what I can tell, it must open and close the disc, and then the handle on the front must change the angle at which the disc opens to, or the "aggressiveness" of the cut? Right?

That is correct. Those discs pulled down the road by making the gangs straight, then when you get to the field you setbthe agressiveness for the job you want done. The steeper the angle the deaper it will cut and stir. Less angle for a smoother bed.

I think this one will go to the straight position while driving forward as long as the discs are turning, where with most discs like that you have to stop and back up. This helps when you get into a tough spot like mud so you can get through without stopping.

It is 10 on the front, 11 on the back.. HEAVY sob too man!!! :) Going to cut like a fool up here!!

The M, OHHHHHH MAN! :) Got it running, fairly well.. Have an issue with the throttle linkage, the spring that holds the hand lever in the notches is a little weak, and it doesn't stay up at top speed. Idling a little too fast, and I think it might be running a little rich, but other than that it is good...

Only problem I have come across, is that there is a quiet, and sometimes occosaional knock on the No.4 Rod Bearing... Probably just need to bit the bullet and put a whole new set of bearings in it, but I want to see how it runs out, and drives first...

Ya there are. MOST of them are on there, a few have been bent / or broken off... Don't really need them around here, if it is so wet that mud is sticking on the discs, then there is no way the tractor is going to make it out of the field by itself! :p

Refiing the notches on the throttle "PAN" and touching up the pawl on the lever to engage better is easy. (triangular file) people rip it to full power by dragging the lever on the notches. Kinda like putting the blade in a hacksaw backward. My uncle allowed me to become informed on that issue at 8 yrs old! (not the hacksaw blade)

You do need the scrapers, even damp soil will stick to the blades. Even very sandy soil will fill in between the blades then the disc won't cut because it acts like a wheel. That disc also has the cast bearings in the gangs do you will need to grease those every few hours of use, at least twice a day. I can't believe you found one with good blades on it, that is very rare.

I have brought home 4 discs, all have had good blades on them? ONE was broken on my of my JD's, but I had two of the same, disc, and we built one good one out of the both of them. These are about 18 inches across...

Most of the scrapers are there, I think it is only missing 1 or 2, and I will rob one off of the parts machine JD and put it on there if it needs it!! ;)

Hey!! For FREE, what more do you want?! ;)

Ya, Thats what I was thinking.. This one has been replaced at some point, it isn't the normal "angled" saw teeth like my other ones are, it is just simply Square notches, with a square peg. The spring is broke inside the handle, so I have another one I am going to install, and that will solve the problem I do believe... ;)
