Diesel-Powered Trident Iceni Sports Car Tops 190 Miles Per Hour, Gets 58 Miles Per Gallon

If you think diesel engines are only for work trucks, sport utility vehicles and efficiency-focused compact cars, the Trident Iceni Magna might change your mind.

This slinky two-seater from Trident Sports Cars Ltd., a boutique British automaker founded in 2005, uses a modified Duramax diesel engine from General Motors to sprint from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 3.7 seconds and hit a top speed of more than 190 miles per hour. Those numbers put it in supercar territory.

The Iceni runs on regular diesel, kerosene, paraffin or biodiesel, according to the company?s website. Biodiesel is made from renewable resources, such as plant biomass, vegetable oil or treated industrial waste.

Trident says the Iceni gets 70 miles per gallon using the U.K.?s fuel economy measurements. That equates to around 58 miles per gallon by U.S. standards.

The 6.6-liter Duramax V8 in the Trident Iceni is the same diesel engine used in the Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and other heavy-duty pickup trucks from GM. In the Iceni, this engine produces 430 horsepower and 700 pound-feet of torque. It is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission.

A track performance upgrade pack boosts output to 660 horsepower and a heady 1,050 pound-feet of torque. The track pack also adds a race-spec suspension, beefier clutch and brakes, and paddle shifters, among other features.

There are three versions of the Trident Iceni. The Iceni Convertible, which was first shown several years ago, has a unique design with a brace extending from the top of the windshield between the seats to the rear of the car.

The Iceni Magna, which was just announced, is a coupe with a so-called ?fastback? design. Trident said when it announced the Magna that it also plans a third model called the Iceni Venturer, which will be a sporty wagon. The British refer to this as an ?estate? body style.

All three models have a starting price of 96,000 pounds, which is about $162,000 at current exchange rates. You don?t get many creature comforts for that price. For example, adjustable power seats and a navigation system are optional.

The company did not say when it will begin producing the vehicles.

The name Iceni originates from a tribe in ancient Britain that rebelled against the Roman invasion.

Not a bad looking little contraption. At the advertised price, I don't understand why they even bothered to mention fuel mileage, If you can afford one, fuel mileage isn't a concern. Kinda like ordering a full meal at Mickey Dees, and a diet Coke to go with it. But, as they say, to each his own.

Kinda looks like the Shelby Daytona Coupe.I agree at that price why worry about fuel mileage.

I watched the diesel drag races here in MI at Martin Dragway a few years back. All of the diesels were running in the RH track, anything else went in the LH track. Loved watching a guy in a BRAND NEW Corvette get his doors blown off by a Duramax powered crew cab 3/4 ton pick up. Then watching that same truck hook up to his trailer with his stuff in it at the end of the day and take off with it. Many of the 3/4 and 1 ton pick ups were running in the 10's and pulling their own supply trailers there.

The fuel mileage, or cost of fuel thing goes way back. In the seventies, during the infamous "gas crisis", I was reading a boating magazine one day while waiting for a haircut. There was a feature article on a new yacht from some company. The reporter asked the company representative if they were concerned that the sudden increase in fuel prices would hurt sales. The company representative replied that if a body could afford to purchase this yacht, they would not be concerned about fuel prices!

I remember the so called gas crisis very well. After the Navy I joined the National Guard.One of the guys uncle owned a gas station. Just outside Fort Hood. We called him since we were told to leave our POVs at home. Because we might have a hard time getting gas.He said gas was no problem.Got down there stopped by the station to say hi. He took us out back of the station. Where we found five fully loaded tankers and two twenty thousand gallon storage tanks.That a gas company had moved in. Every station in town was overflowing with gas.Made you wonder about the so called gas crisis.

Is it sold in the US? Will the car meet all US standards? Cool car.

Does it have a hitch so you can pull a gravity box?

I wonder if they got their engine computer programmers from VW? VW might have some available soon.

That beast looks fast even sitting still. But the description makes me think it might be a little nose heavy compared to a well built turbo 4 cylinder speed demon.

Must have been several years ago and a very poor Corvette. Highly modified truck vs. a very stock base Corvette. Don't try it with a new Corvette. When I was in the Army, there was a VW bug that could beat almost anything on the track.

First thing my grandsons would do, would be to take the mufflers off.

I wonder if it has DEF fluid?

Speaking of drag races, some 25 years ago we had an Olds 88 with a 5.7 diesel and a nephew of ours had a full sized Ford Bronco with a 400 gas burner.

He and my wife squared off at a stop light once and she smoked him with the diesel. Poor kid had two indignities heaped on him. He was beat in a drag race by his own aunt, and she did it with a diesel.

It would have been around 2005. With a programmer, injectors, fuel delivery upgrades, intake/exhaust and a turbo upgrade, and 4WD launches, it is VERY easy. Actually quite easy to beat almost any other car you might run into on a normal day with a diesel pick up, with just a simple programmer. Unless you live in an area that just so happens to be riddled with Ferrari'a and such.

I guess we would have to look at times. I have a 7.3 diesel with all Banks upgrades including the chip and a C5 Corvette. No comparison. The truck is fast but not a Corvette. Again it would be a highly modified truck as I said vs a base Corvette.

I could see him getting smoked but not beat, those were dogs.
