Beef and pork sales and consumption

The current issue of Time magazine has an article on consumption of red meat and processed meat being a possible cause of cancers. What caught my eye was some
figures on meat consumption and exports of meat. Some expert opinion would be nice.

On consumption, they list China, the European Union, the US, Brazil, and Russia. China consumes a lot of pork, more than all of the other 4 listed. The US is
a distant third on the list. For beef and veal consumption, they list the US, Brazil, the EU, China, and Argentina. The US is first in consumption, with
Brazil about 20% less than the US, and the EU and China close behind. Argentina is about 1/3 of the second three.

What was really interesting to me was the exporting countries. For beef exports, India was first ahead of Brazil, followed by Australia with the US a distant
fourth, exporting less than 1/2 of India's total. Really? India produces that much beef?

For pork exports, The EU is the leader closely by the US. Canada exports a little less that 1/2 as much pork as the US, Brazil exports less than 1/2 as much
as Canada, and China is less than 1/2 as much as Brazil.

Comments welcome.

Are these numbers based on total consumption or per capita consumption? If it's total, it stands to reason the rankings.
Since India is mostly Hindu it also stands to reason that they export beef since they won't consume it.

That whole report lacked any real information. The news articles didn't cite anything that conclusively proved their assertion. In fact, if I remember, they said it was a one in over 200,000 chance, which is pretty much your chance of getting cancer if yo live and do everything right.

They never talk about how you are more likely to get e. coli from fruits and vegetables they say you should eat than from meat. All of these things are horribly skewed and slanted.

It total consumption and total exports. Yes, I thought the article glossed over some things that didn't fit their narrative.

On the Hindus not eating beef thing, nothing keeps them from drinking milk and they use the cows as draft animals. Maybe they are ok with exporting the overage
cows, don't know.

Good gosh ! Disputing Time Magazine ! ! Those jokers have NO Idea. I can put out a whole lot of statistics that could be accepted by anyone with out proving anything, AND, they may be accepted in general. Criminy !

The report that was in my local from the WHO report and supplied no real data, just opinion.

It was like the ridiculous article about pumpkins. The department of energy said pumpkins were a source affecting climate change. The report said really nothing more than that. It did say they were a source of C02. It did not explain how another crop would be more or less harmful or even how leaving the field fallow would be any different. I cannot imagine it would. All plants sequester C02 (yes, they respirate and can release C02 in the evening instead of oxygen) and it is logical when they break down they release C02 but how it could be anymore or less than what else might be on the same field is beyond me.

It's getting harder and harder to find reliable information. The national medias all have an agenda and nearly all studies are skewed to fit the idea of some special interest group. In most cases I had just as soon trust something that is offered as opinion on this site. My opinions are formed from personal experience and observations of those that have and are working examples.

Ok, I googled beef production in India. India exports a lot of beef, but most of it is water buffalo which the USDA classifies as beef. Slaughter of water buffalo appearantly does not violate the Hindu concerns about killing and eating sacred cows since it is a separate animal.(all I know about water buffaloes are that they are large and are used as draft animals in rice fields). Indian beef of whatever description is consumed in the general area, with Vietnam being the main customer but with the Indian beef being transhipped to China. For reasons not clear to me China does not like this trade is is showing signs of trying to stop it. The demand for beef in China has increased due to better economic conditions there.

Buffalo meat is tougher and most of it goes to the ground beef trade in the general area. India does have numerous Moslems and Christians who have no objection to eating beef so there is a market there.

Interestingly enough but having nothing to do with the beef trade, the cow manure is used as an ingredient in plaster, as well as the usual use as fertilizer.

The best way I know to influence other people is to scare them. Tell them it causes cancer, and a good number of those you tell it to will stop doing whatever you say is causing cancer. No proof or other evidence is required.

I know one thing for certain........
If I were to give up everything that somebody told me was not good for me, I would already be dead. The food is poisonous or carcinogenic - no matter which food. The air is poisonous - polluted from whatever is on the agenda today. The water is poisonous from whatever gets added to it at the water works. In short, the air, water, food, and environment in general is bad for you. NOT!!!!!!!!!

So, how do the ones with the agenda explain how a good number of my ancestors lived well into their '90s and ate the food, drank the water, and breathed the air???

Ha Ha Ha Ha, Time magazine, what a joke. I use them for fire starters, use to wonder why the fire stunk at first!!!!

I quit buying beef and pork from the store, you got it, its nothing but crap. Take the pork, fry it,,,, smell it? Whats it smell like? You know. You cant believe what they do to those animals. I buy all my beef and pork from local farmers, it taste like it did 40 years ago. They should send all this crap meat to Washington, and let them eat it.

I hear they are putting Caitlyn Jenner on the cover for Man of the year. With exclusive photos of his "package" LOL

WHO doesn't say to stop eating red meat. They put most of the risk on processed meats. Bacon (not giving it up) bologne, hot dogs (are they really meat???), stuff like that. What I heard on the radio is that eating portion of red meat (beef, pork, goat, you know, mammals) equivalent to a half a deck of cards per day poses no risk.

Our problem isn't that we eat red meat, our problem is portion size and the quality of the meat we eat. And processing, and preservatives.

I seldom eat bought meat. Too much crap going into the animals that I wouldn't eat myself.

I just took a pig in yesterday. It spent the summer outside in an open pen getting food scraps. It had a great weekend as we canned applesauce, so it got all the peels and cores. I sometimes stop at fast food restaurants when traveling, and what garbage! I can't understand how people can eat at those places several times a week or day. I'll be buying a half a grassfed beef this fall from my neighbor as well.

I couldn't agree with you more. I just posted somewhere here, I buy all my pork and beef from local growers that do not use antibiotics just because. There picky what they feed them, they are free ranged, and live happy lives. Grow my own potatoes, veggies, and take the time with my wife to can and preserve my crop. Most do not know what real good food is.
The taste of my pork and beef is wonderful! We had side pork, baked potato, and squash for Sunday night supper. Still licking my chops from that!
