International 484 Transmission

I have a 484 International diesel tractor. The trans will not shift into 3rd or 4th gear. It works fine in the the other gears and high/low range. The shift lever on top of the trans for these two gears will not move. The tractor sat in the elements for a few years and I'm trying to restore it. Any suggestions/advise on reason or repair. Thanks in advance.

Take the gear shift top cover off and realign the shift fork slots. That will be neutral. The gear shift may be worn down on the end.

Hi Jerry, since you said the tractor sat in the elements for a while, my thoughts are that the battery acid may have leaked down and seized the shift lever where it goes through the transmission top cover.

The shifter fork may be rusted to the shaft. My 420 sat for several years before I got round to do the motor. The 3rd and 4 gear would not engage. I ran it for a few weeks and the forks on that rail started to move slightly. After another week or so I got it to work and wear the rust off the rail and it started going into gear. Got lucky and never had to take the cover off. Hope you are that lucky.

Thank you sir. I hope so too. I took the 2 bolts out that holds the shift cover in place, but it does not move up out of the trans case although I dont know if is supposed to. Your information sounds good. Previous owner said it shifted fine before parking. So I will wait and try before digging into it any further. Thank you.
