Tractors That Jump Out Of Gear?????

I asked a question in the AC section about the Allis Chalmers WD45 jumping out of gear when going down a hill - but thought I'd broaden the question to Tractor Talk.

Of the tractors made, say prior to 1980, any particular models that over time have a tendency to jump out of gear?

We have hills and I have concerns about buying, as an example, a WD45 and turning one of my kids loose driving down (moderate) hills with a baler, haybine or trailer attached and the tractor popping out of gear on them.

On the reverse side, what tractors had GREAT brakes? Our old Ford 3000 would lock-up the rear wheels in a flash. My old MF50 has brakes, but not nearly as good as the Ford - but do get the job done, just not great brakes. I've never had either tractor jump out of gear.

So what tractor models have a tendency over time to jump out of gear and which old tractors just had GREAT brakes? Oliver, Farmall, Deere, others?

Thanks!
Bill

bill, i have a 48 farmall m that will jump out of 5th. has a heavy loader on it, fluid filled tires and 4 wheel weights. it was rode hard and put away wet, but i like it. has band brakes, wont stop worth a hoot. my 52 farmall m has factory disc brakes and you will bounce yer noggin off thee steering wheel if you stomp on em. my 49 farmall h has aftermarket lambert disc brakes on it, it will also knock yer noggin!!. my '41 farmall b will jump out of second pulling a 2-14 lil genius plow, it just plain dont like it in 2nd. brakes aint worth a hoot on that one either.

I had a Ford 850 that would jump out of fifth. I have seen Massey Harris 44 jump out of all gears in a heavy load. One mechanic who had worked for Massey claimed it was because of the long shaft running the full length of the transmission. Many tractors like MF multi-power and IH TA freewheel without engine running.

The old guys 4020 jumped out of seventh all the time since new, now does it in fifth also, friends 185 Allis will jump out of third, but according to an old Allis dealer there was something wrong with it if it didn't! LOL

My 860 ford will jump out of 3rd IF being pushed by a load going down hill or on a fast throttle down with a load behind.I ride the brakes lightly when going down hill with a load behind. That eliminates the jump out.My brakes are excellent since a brake job and axel seal replacement.I'm told that there is a small amount of end play in the X/MIS. shafts from worn bearings.

Clean, lube and adjust the 4020's shift linkages. No need of the gear jumping.

I have a 185 allis that does not jump out , however the transmission was done almost all the way when I bought it so I finished it . The brakes are nothing to be proud of . My ford 5000 has great brakes and no tranny issues , approaching 10000 hours.

That 81 4040 Deere with the Quad Range that I bought new started jumping out of B range under load when it was about 9 years old. They ended up putting 3 new gears in that one at a cost of close to $4000 way back then.

I think most any tractor can be made to jump out of gear. You have some guys who grind the snot out of the gears and other guys who push or pull on the shift lever so hard that they bend the forks. Either one in time can cause this problem.

The worst ones around here are the AC 180,185,190 and XT190. They just about ALL will jump out of fourth gear due to trying to speed shift them to go with heavy loads on the road.

There are plenty of JD Quad range transmission that will jump out of gear due to poor maintenance and speed shifting.

My 1550 will jump out pulling under load in 3rd . D 15 I had never jumped but I never abused it either. Besides jumping we had an m with ta and the oliver does the same thing free wheel going down hill. Not far from me a hired man was driving on the road took an oliver down hill when he was half way down he shifted the hydro power causing it to free wheel then he tried shifting back and killed the motor it then went through a t intersection and he shot across the road through the fence he baled out on a pile of rock and the tractor went in the creek

My D19 Allis will jump out of 2 on the trans under a heavy load. (3rd and 5th on final drive)

Best brakes I had on a tractor was an 856 Farmall I once owned. But, they were hydraulic assist, not pure mechanical.

I love my 30 series Case tractors but , they are not for you. Never had one ever jump out of gear but the brakes require regular cleaning , and adjusting. They can be made to work well and get a bad rap for weak brakes. Just a maintenance thing.

Hi Bill,
I had a 49 Farmall Cub with belly mower that would jump out of 1st gear mowing and pulling a hill. Scared the devil out of me the first time! After that, I kept a light bungee cord on the shifter to keep it in gear. As far as the brakes, well, as long as there was room to turn at the bottom of the hill, you were okay. If it was an "emergency stop," you needed to be reciting the Lord's Prayer.............

Hahaha!

Good luck with the new tractor!

yes indded ../oil the linkages ,, it is amazing how nuch better everythi ng worx after oilin ,,. also oil my 1070 case shifter

(quoted from post at 20:54:45 10/27/15) why not fix them not that big of a deal

Can't get parts for some of the older ones so just how are you going to fix it? Plus some guys have never been in a transmission so fixing includes a shop visit that can get real expensive real quick.

I think AC has the worst reputation for popping out of gear. Mostly on the 100 (185 190 ECT) series and older to include the W's and WDs. Mostly operator induced from shifting on the go. So if I were in the market for a tractor that an inexperienced operator was going to be using towing something AC would definitely not be considered.

And just about any abused tractor from any manufacturer can jump out of a gear or 2.
