I'm trying to rebuild a starter for the first time on a 1994 ford ranger. I followed the directions for rebuilding-- hooked it up but as soon as I put the battery cables on the battery, it tries to spin. I'm pretty sure I've got the terminals hooked up correctly and the wires are not shorted out at the terminals. Any thoughts?

old has a good point, a sharp rap or two on the solenoid may loosen the innards if they are sticking. If the starter stops turning, then the solenoid definitely should be replaced.

I had the solenoid installed incorrectly. Fixed that-- got the truck running but is making a funny noise-- Time to solve another problem.... Thanks
