Close call today

Im in Dallas today and it's raining. I took an exit and just as I got into the turn there was some water on the road and I could see it was covered with oil. In half a heartbeat I was sliding sideways in the lane, across the shoulder, and into the grass. When the tires hit the grass I saw the trailer tires lift off the ground in my mirror. I thought I was a gonner. I know better than to hit the brakes in a skid, but what was interesting is when I looked down the dash was lit up with the stability control and traction control warnings and the engine was at full power. This was all without any input from me. Now I know about the physics involved and know that that is the right thing to do in that situation. But I never even had time to get to that part of my thinking yet. I'm not sure if it saved me or not, but in less time than I could even consider it I was back on the ramp and on my way. Anyway, for me it was lesson learned again. Watch out for slippery roads whennit rains, especially in the south where it stays dry for long periods.

Well Jon, you posted about the Asmish doing doenuts with his buggy. You just had a bigger buggie and horse. HeHe. Glad the rig pulled out of the skid.
I will talk ton you soon. Going to try out the splitter on the trackhoe this afternoon.

I know it's not funny, but that just reminded me of the first National Lampoon Vacation movie. When he fell asleep while driving, went down the ramp, through traffic and slid in to a motel parking lot then woke up. LOL

Rain here today after being dry for weeks. Went to town and saw oily stain on water puddles on main hiway (US hwy 12). Seems all high use roads get slppery after periods of no rain.Glad you came out OK.

I know what you mean about the oil slick roads. I was driving around Ft Worth yesterday when it had just started to rain. I've driven on snow that had better traction! First rain for parts of town since May!

Evidently the stability control doesn't work at low speed, like trying to take off up hill in an empty PU. The rear tires just keep spinning, the rear end just keeps coming around...

There were wrecks everywhere, firetrucks, ambulances, closed streets! What a mess!

Glad it turned out ok. Two weeks ago during a rainstorm, I saw two semi's within a mile of one another jackknifed in the weeds. The drivers were ok, but not so much for the trucks.
I see a lot of them running super singles - I wonder if they're more prone to hydroplaning?

Doesn't always have to be wet places to have an accident. A couple of days ago, the tree trimmers had the inside lane blocked off with an arrow truck to move traffic to the right away from their work zone. Somebody drove right into the back of that truck! Went to the next street, there was a car on it's side in the raised median (no idea how that happened). At the next street traffic was backed up for half a mile for some reason; all I could see was a lot of blue & red flashing lights down there, so I went the opposite way.

Nice, dry morning and lots of crashes where there shouldn't have been any.

I was thinking the stability control even applies brakes on 1 side of the vehicle in such a situation also. Could you tell if that was the case here?Interesting to hear the system saved you and worked properly.Mark

This truck will apply brakes to idividual wheels on the tractor and to the trailer. I don't think it applied any on the tractor but it did on the trailer because I saw that pressure gage was up.

I have to drive to the Oklahoma panhandle next week. My tires are getting pretty thin, but the truck is traded and waiting for new one to come in, so no new tires in the plans. It is getting pretty squirrely in the rain, so not looking forward to any rain.

Sometimes around here (NY hills)the caterpillars are bad and if doesn't rain for awhile the roads are slick from those that get run over.

saw that in the 1960's a lot in Indiana-Illinois area before Interstates. Oil from cars accumulates on pavement during dry spells. Then it rains & suddenly you're driving on oil! Driver demonstrated this to me by pulling onto the pavement & suddenly gunning it. Car barely moved but wheels spinning like 60 mph. Might as well have been driving on ice!
