HF Generator sets

The engines are Honda knock offs. The generator just has brushes and a few diodes. Now some have voltage control boards too but not sure. If you treat it well and don't overload or get it soaking wet etc. They should be good. I know several people with their 8500 unit and one with the 4000 one. All are happy.

I'm not a HF fan at all. However I bought their 7500 watt generator about 5 years ago and used it for 4 straight days right then. After that it got used 2 days a year for a tractor pull and concession stand power. This fall the plastic fan on the flywheel disintegrated while it was running unattended. I found a new fan fairly easily and reasonable on the internet and it ran the concession stand fine this year again. Not saying that they are all great but my experience surprised me with how reliable it is.

I bought a HF 8750 running watt generator set this spring for occassional portable use. I bought it because it was approximately 1/2 the price of a name brand unit of similar size, weight and power.

I've started and tested it but have not yet used it.

Will probably use it this fall/winter.

Last year I was looking for generator and looked at generators at Lowes, Menards, Harbor Freight ,TSC and Ace. I ended up buying A 8,000 run 10,000 surge generator from the local Ace Hardware because they do service what they sell which the others don't service what they sell. Our Ace dealer is a large dealer and has six stores in a 50 mile radius.

I am not HF's biggest fan but for VERY occasional light use they can be a bargin. With all that stuff it almost through away if it fails. I have noticed they do not hold load or deal with surge very well.

When you buy one of the them. It is just a matter of luck on how long they last. I have one in my shop has less than five hours on it. Gensection burned out. Same customer went back bought another one. That was in 2009 and it is still running and producing power. As long as you don't expect service and a long life. Plus cheap you will be ok. I am not even sure about some of the name brands. But with them you have someone to complain to.

I bought a 5000w generator from TSC a few years ago. Plastic fan got loose on shaft and would slip badly. Tries to order parts, that part had been replaced by a newer version (no wonder) that would not fit the older generator so SOL. So far JB weld is holding it fine.

I am not a fan of anything from Harbor Freight, and I will not buy anything from them, cheap or not. Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.
