Silly Chicken

Got these chickens last fall.
Have not had one go broody on me all summer.
Now here it is the middle of October and 1 decides she wants to sit on a nest.

Maybe she over heard me complaining a few weeks ago about the hatchery is out of white egg layers and she decided to help out.

Maybe I need to tell her thanks but no thanks because you are sitting on 2 glass eggs and 2 real eggs and I think since there is not a roster in the bunch she may be wasting her time sitting on the nest.

You would think chickens would have a internal clock that would prevent them from going broody in the fall and winter.

I have twice had chickens hatch broods in October. One was a Light Brahma and she raised 12 thru the winter with very little shelter. One of those chicks swept the large fowl division of the MSF the following summer. The other hen was a small white Ameraucana and she hatched her brood in the hay shed. They ran around in there all winter with snow on the ground just outside. Impressive mothers x2!

John, I've seen chickens go broody at odd times too, a rooster being present or not.
But then, since the age of 5, I've known domestic chickens to be err... low on intelligence ;-) The less bred "wild" chicken varieties consistently tend to go broody during spring only.

I have one setting right now that should hatch off next week. But she is lucky I have a separate brooding pen that I will put her and the chicks in for the winter. But you are right I wished she had done it this spring.
