garden prep question

I want to plow my garden soon. It has standing corn stalks and a good crop of Lambsquarter. can I 'chop' it as is or should I run my old single row disc over it,to flatten the growth first. Thanks

What do you plan to plant there next year? Some plants like bare black ground with no trash on top, others don't mind growing through trash. I would chop the trash up as fine as I can get it or remove it completely, especially those pesky Lambsquarters though they have already shed their seeds by now. Sometimes it doesn't pay to do it the cheap easy way.

I always mow as close as I can and disc it in to let as much rot as possible. It is no fun planting in lots of trash and it makes cultivating small stuff difficult. Especially, corn stalks need to be chopped up and plowed in.

My soil is heavy black clay that can't be worked unless moisture is just right. I like to chop everthing up and leave ground in tall beds over winter. If it's raining alot at planting time tops can be knocked off to plant on beds where dirt is dryer. If ground can be worked about 30 days before planting I bust beds into middles. When I had sandy soil I usually planted a winter cover crop and did all plowing in spring.

I run my shredder over it set as low as possible without getting in the dirt. I'll let that sit till its dried out good then mold board it.
