Peanut Harvesting

I planted some peanuts this year for the grandkids and myself. I would like to know when to

dig them. The plants are starting to turn a little yellow and there are alot of filled peanuts

on them. Do I need to wait until the plants die back and turn brown or can they be dug now.?

I know they need to be layed out upside down a few days to dry up before pulling off the peanuts.

The main reason I,m asking is I go Monday for knee replacement a won,t be able to plow them out

for several weeks after the surgery. Thanks Robert in Md.

I planted peanuts here for only the third time in about 30 years. From the research that I did and the Questions that I asked here when they are filled out to suit you its time. They do not blossun all at once so waiting for all to fill is not the right answer. Also the yellowing of the leaves is a indication of maturity. The normal approach is to dig/pull the plants turn the plants over so the peanuts can dry for a time then harvest them from the plants. In my case I wasn't able to leave them to dry on the plant so picked them as I went washed then on some 1/2 in hardware cloth to clean. We eat most of them salted and boiled. Some we eat green raw, some we spread out and dried and eat them that way. Don't store in a container or bucket they need air circulation or they will sour. I dug/pulled my 3 75 ft rows over a three week time. By the end they were getting a little more mature than I liked and some kind of bugs were eating then under ground.

Robert, I grow them each year, two 250 ft rows. If I remember right, they need about 125 days from planting to harvest. If you pull out a plant and have immature peanuts they might fill out more with a few more weeks of time. Keep in mind, if you windrow the plants to dry, that deer or turkeys can eat a lot of your peanuts if you have those critters nearby.

Thanks for the replys, I think I will plow one row tomorrow and put them on some flat wagons to dry.

The middlebuster plow works good and I might try my grandfathers white potato plow to get them out of

the ground. Thanks Guys

Don,t want to hy jack your thread but think I want to plant some next year. How expensive are the seed/ and how many does it take to [plant an acre?

I just purchased about a gallon bag of raw peanuts from the local hardware store and shelled the

biggest nuts to plant.
