Tires for plow

I have a David Bradley 2-14 plow I purchased at the junk yard. It has 6.00-16 size tires on it but they are shot. Right now I can't do much with it like it is so I'd like to put some reasonably priced tires on it so I can at least move it better. Eventually I'd like to try and plow with it as the plow is pretty well complete and ready to go except for tires. I'm thinking now that 16" & 17" tires have become common on cars and pickups I might find some used tires I could put on this thing. I'm kind of thinking something like mud grips or something that will be able to lift the plow with out the wheel just sliding. I am not opposed to using a tube in them if need be. What would be a good readily available common size tire that would possibly work for this? I know the 6.00-16 implement tire is pretty tall, and I probably don't want too short of a tire as I don't think the wheel lift plow comes out of the ground that far anyway. Thanks for your replies in advance! Good Day!

Standard 5 lug implement rim. And we ran smooth non lug car tires 6:00X16 for years without problems on lifting. And that 6:00X16 tire is 28" tall. What would be close and work would be 6:50X16 but just as hard to find. I would try 215-75R-16LT truck tires as they are close to a 7:50X16 implement. Little bigger but you probably would not be wanting to go as deep as plow could so the larger tires should work.

Worn out 6.00x16" tractor fronts will work. If you experience a traction issue on the land wheel, a tire chain can be installed.

P155/90X16 temporary spare, I would look at.
Might be a little shorter than a 6.00X16.
If traction is a problem put a tire chain on it.

Only time I remember having trouble with the trip wheel sliding was when I was plowing at night and there was a heavy dew. We used passenger car tires. Plowed all night and then cleaned up and went to a day job. Was young then. . .

I have put a lot of tires on plows, a used 21585x16 will be as close as you will find to your size. A plow is not fussy about the tire size.

Jim,
I am probably on a minor point here, but if the lifting springs are properly set there is no "need" for the trip wheel/tire to have any more tread grip than the other tire. My number #8 trip wheel skidded when lowering years ago...I adjusted the spring tensions and never have that problem now.

From my learning experience (my study of ag history and the advice of the late Hugh MacKay) after WWII plows ordered with rims for rubber tires came from the factory with only the rims; the farmer or dealer scrounged for a pair of tires to fit, thus the reason many old plow tires do not have matching tire treads.

hd,
I agree with you. Nearly any tire diameter will work on a trailer plow. If the plow is somewhat "out of kilter", that is what the adjusting handles are for! They have plenty of room for adjustment whether the plow is up or down.

True: Our Little Genius front trip tire skidded on wet grass at times with a rather smooth car tire. Went to a used snow and it stopped skidding. No real issue, but good looking tires makes the plow look 3 times better. Jim

99.99% of 5 lug implement wheels are 5.5" bolt circle with I think a 4" center hole. A bunch of Ford truck wheels fit as well. You go to any tire dealer and as for a 5 bolt implement wheel they will just ask tire diameter 14", 15" or 16" and how wide a rim do you want, 5" 6" 8" for depending on tire you want to use if a 6:70 x15 then you would want the 5" wide rim but if you were using a 11Lx15 flotation then you would want the 8" or possibly wider. but they will all fit the same hub. That wheel from your plow was also used on the 2 wheel walking garden tractors but only 3 of the 5 lug holes were drilled out.

"Good looking tires make the plow look 3 times better"

Jim, you are so right. I refer you to my photos of my #8 dated 7-13-13, "IH #8 Plow in it's Sunday go to meetin' clothes" on Implement Forum. I have it looking pretty, but this plow gets exercise every year at plow days. Tires match, but treads are not good for gripping soil. I don't know how to move that info to this subject or date....and, yes, it's a cheap way to show off also!!

On the other hand, is it ok to show IH equipment without being a "show off"?
