Need PTO Control Switch Help

Lost Cub

New User
Hi Everyone,

On a Cub Cadet (Super Garden Tractor Model # 2284) that I'm working on, the "Front Power Take Off" (PTO) control switch is moved up to get the hydraulic pump going but it doesn't stay up by itself like it should. I have to push the switch up and hold it with one hand while I use the other hand to move the hydraulic controls. Does anyone know how to make that PTO switch stay up without me having to hold it up there? Thanks for your help! Ross

I think it was a 2284 that I had. On mine all the hydraulics came from the transmission pump, so I assume you have an auxiliary hydraulic pump connected to the PTO pulley on the front of the motor. Once engaged that PTO clutch is powered through a relay with some sort of latching circuit. The latching circuit runs though a number of safety switches (seat and reverse that I can remember) as well as the PTO off switch. I don't have a wiring diagram, but I'd try to trace through the latching circuit. If you want to brute force it (not recommended by me), you could power either the PTO solenoid or the relay control directly.

I had one and it had sat outside a lot of its life..the pto switch has a for lack of a better term a "breakover" internally and if exposed to rain and such will develop rust and dirt which will not let it snap over..i used an electrical contact cleaner and sprayed mine lots with that and worked it several times while spraying to get it to stay engaged..if that doesn't work about the only other way is to replace the switch itself..this is all assuming that it is the factory switch and hasn't been replaced before..the jd and other mowers had a pto switch that you pulled up on and slid into the on position and then the sleeve on the toggle would slide back down and lock it in place..i like those best but they are a little higher than the regular variety at the parts store..also be sure if you do replace it you get one rated for the correct amperage...hope this helps and good luck
