Hydraulic valve body

I'm new to working on hydraulic systems and I was hoping you guys could give me a little info. I have a gresen valve body on a kelly loader that I'm putting on my case 830. The question is how do I tell if the valve body is an open or closed type as this will change how I plumb it. Second question is if it is a closed type is there a way to convert it to open. Thanks for your replies

An open center valve allows fluid to flow from the P port to the T port when the lever is in the center position.

A closed center blocks the P port when in the center position.

You would have to change the spools to convert it. Some offer that option, some don't. If you have the model number of the valve you could probably search the spec sheet, find out what it is, what's available, who the local distributor is. I would do some careful research first, hydraulics are sooo expensive! Don't want to invest parts in something to find it wont work!

I send you an e-mail. Do you have a casting number for the valve. Most of the Gresen valves use what is known as a conversion or closed center plug to convert them from open center. We used to say "blow through it". If you can blow through it is open center. I still have some Gresen literature left I think. J.

Yes I do have the casting numbers written down at home. Ill be home later this evening and will reply to you email. Thank you.

I know that's why I came here first to ask questions before I do anything. You guys have a heck of a lot of knowledge and experience and I certainly appreciate the help. if my valve body is the open type fluid will come from my supply hose, pass through the valve when it is in the center position and go right out the return hose right?

Yes, that is correct. And that is the type valve you need for a positive displacement pump (gear pump), which is likely what you have.

yes I believe that case does have a gear pump. I want to make sure I have this right before I start the tractor up and ruin the pump.
Thanks again, I'm sure I'll have more questions before I'm done.
