Filling big potholes

Next time you think we have big street potholes and idiot workers here in the states; I want you to remember this...........

In a shocking incident that took place in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, a 45-year-old man was buried alive after he accidentally slipped into a pothole.

The man slipped into an under-construction road and was buried alive after negligent workers stuffed the pothole with molten bituminous material and ran a dumper over it to level the road, according to a report in The Times Of India.

The incident, which took place on Friday, was brought to the attention of authorities and media by locals after they noticed a hand sticking out from the tarred road.

The police told TOI that the victim had gone to a fair with his wife on Friday night. While his wife stayed back at her parents' house, he was returning to his village after visiting a liquor shop.

"It was dark and there were no warning signs. He would have been walking in an inebriated condition when he fell into the pit between Udlana and Hata village and lost consciousness. Traffic had been restricted on the stretch as the pit occupied more than half of the road," the investigating officer told TOI. "The workers must not have noticed him while filling the pothole with bitumen," he added.

The driver of the dumper and a labourer who had filled the pothole were arrested and booked for negligence leading to death, and the victim's body has been sent for post-mortem.

According to the report, district collector Vivek Narwal has said that the victim's family would be given Rs 50,000 as compensation.

(quoted from post at 18:10:25 09/22/15) And I went and looked it up.

50000 Indian Rupee equals $758.674 US Dollars
The amount the family was given for compensation.

Yes, but average annual income is the equivalent of $616 U.S. Dollars.

It's unfortunate what happened to the guy, but I'd hate to think that we are setting american standards to that of a 3rd world country. We're supposed to be setting the standards for the world here.
