JD 7000 Planter

Can anyone tell me how much HP I am going to need to pull a six row drawn planter? I have the smaller tractors...35 and 50 hp. Then I jumps up to 160 hp. I would like to run this out in the field "as is" just to see what is working and what isn't.

On solid ground the 50 HP tractor will pull it. In worked ground you will need more like 75 hp Minimum. I pulled a JD 7000 six row with dry fertilizer with a JD 2640 that was 70 PTO HP and it really struggled on banks with worked ground. They pull easier in notil than they do in worked ground. All the tires/gauge wheels and etc. sink in lose ground.

Thanks guys! Guess I will pull out the big tractor. I forgot I have the 50 hp tractor here on this side of town pulling the haybine. I'll be on tilled ground. I want to dig up the rows and see what kind of spacing it gives me...if any.

A 50 HP tractor will easily pull one all day long. I pulled a 6 row 7000 without fertilizer with a 51 A John Deere in 4th gear planting mud holes and had no horsepower or traction problems. I pulled it fifth (6.5 MPH) just a bit but the temperature gauge didn't like it. It doesn't take much of a tractor to pull it but it does take good hydraulic pressure to raise the markers. The A struggled to raise the markers though.

The 50 will pull it fine.

I ran a 4 row with 27 hp, that got the job done, but it was a little light, drove a little slow. Don't know if it was coincidence, was one of my better yielding years....

Takes good hydraulics to lift a 7000 with seed and fert, I had several 45-50hp old tractors to run the 4 row, but none had good enough hydraulics....

I pulled a 7200 finger pick-up liquid fert with a farmall ''m'' live hy power stearing duel wheels 3wheel weights, most of the time 4th gear 3th on the hills
